Product Description

Edited by bestselling anthologist John Joseph Adams, LIGHTSPEED is an online science fiction and fantasy magazine. In its pages, you will find science fiction: from near-future, sociological soft SF, to far-future, star-spanning hard SF—and fantasy: from epic fantasy, sword-and-sorcery, and contemporary urban tales, to magical realism, science-fantasy, and folktales. When you read LIGHTSPEED, it is our hope that you’ll see where science fiction comes from, where it is now, and where it’s going.

Each month, we present a mix of originals and reprints, from a variety of authors—from the bestsellers and award-winners you already know to the best new voices you haven’t heard of yet. LIGHTSPEED also offers a variety of nonfiction features, including feature interviews, Q&As with our authors that go behind-the-scenes of their stories, and more. Plus, as a special bonus for our ebook readers and subscribers, each ebook issue features a novella and novel excerpts not included on our website.

A 12 month subscription to LIGHTSPEED includes 96 stories (about 480,000 words of fiction), plus assorted nonfiction. That's almost 5 regular-sized books worth of fiction!

Kindle Magazines are fully downloaded onto your Kindle so you can read them even when you're not wirelessly connected.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Fantasy/Sci-Fi Magazine January 1, 2013

This magazine is a little over 2 years old now, and I started my subscription about 3 months ago. After reading several issues now, I think I can give a review that is not based on just one read. Moving on, this magazine contains 4 new stories, and 4 reprints in each issue, and some stories are available for podcast. The cover art seems to always catch my attention. To sum this up in a few words, all I can say is that I look forward to each issue and read them right away and usually cannot stop until I have read it from cover to cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Stories July 25, 2012
Initially, I purchased this magazine for its science fiction stories. I discovered that it contained excellent and engrossing fantasy stories as well. If you enjoy engrossing, thoughtful science fiction and fantasy writing, this magazine is for you.

Every issue of Lightspeed offers science fiction, fantasy and author interviews. In it you can read all types of speculative fiction from near-future, sociological, soft sf, to far-future, star-spanning SF. And, all types of fantasy--high fantasy, contemporary urban tales, surrealism, magical realism, science fantasy, folktales...and anything and everything in between. Lightspeed consistently delivers brilliant stories by some of my favorite authors and also introduces me to emerging talents.

I also love the author interviews: getting a behind the scenes peek at what motivated the author, how the story developed is always fascinating. And to top it off Kindle subscribers get exclusive content not available online: I like that lots!

The editor, John Joseph Adams, has published a bunch of brilliant anthologies including Wastelands, and Brave New Worlds. I'm very happy with my Kindle subscription because each issue lets me delve into wondrous worlds, mind-opening ideas, and character driven stories. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read guaranteed. April 16, 2014

Another new publication of new Science Fiction/Fantasy stories. These publications give you a chance to find new authors you might not find otherwise and happily I have found some authors that are worth keeping an eye out for.
I'm retired and mobility disabled, now my previous enjoyment of Sci-Fi/Fantasy has become my recreation to the extent that I'm always looking for new authors or authors I had not encountered in the past, publications like Lightspeed Magazine provide a quick fix and introductions to authors to look for. Great Mag at a great price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful selections January 26, 2014
Having an issue of this seems a lot like having an extra issue of the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction each month, and given the editor of this that is not too surprising. For a couple years I had read new short stories online in Fantasy magazine, which at some point became defunct and merged into Lightspeed Magazine to encompass both Fantasy and SF genres. As I caught up to date on those, and got an actual eReader I decided to give the full magazine a try (Many of the stories are available online for free).

I am impressed with Adam's selections and enjoy the mixture of new stories and reissued 'classics'. Being relatively new to the field these classics are new discoveries for me as well. Lightspeed is unique in also featuring good selections of nonfiction pieces as well, something I had previously only seen in the also defunct print magazine "Realms of Fantasy' or in the often over-specialized and technical form that Analog presents.

A great value

4.0 out of 5 stars Good choice of authors August 6, 2013

I've only read two issues, but so far, they stories chosen have been pretty clever. There's science fiction and fantasy, excerpts from novels and short stories. At $2.99 per issue, it gives the reader quite a bit of entertainment. My only problem is that the subscription price is much lower than the price per issue. You get one free issue when you buy 12.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great blend of storytelling August 2, 2013

There's a lot here for any sf/f reader, and I'm very fond of the blend. It's a good mixture of both fantasy and sci-fi, and for the most part I find the stories here to be more accessible and engrossing than other competing magazines. An excellent read all round.

Sample only, I won't subscribe. Too much like fantasy. Stories are hard to follow. I guess that I'm just a Neanderthall hard Sci-Fi reader.
