Editorial Reviews

Kazuma Kiryu, once one of the most fearsome yakuza and known as the Dragon of the Dojima Family, comes back to Kamuro-cho after a ten year jail sentence. His return means many things to many different people, but to one girl, it means she may have a chance of finding her mother. To one of Kazuma's yakuza friends, however, it means a chance to settle a score.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good (but Esoteric) Film March 31, 2010
I bought the movie because I am very much in love with the Yakuza (Ryu Ga Gotoku)game series. The video game series itself is a wonderfully told story of a former Yakuza, Kazuma Kiryu, who is trying to leave his past of crime behind him. If you haven't played any of the games, you probably won't like--nor understand-- this movie.

It takes a certain amount of prior knowledge to grasp the plot in it's entirety. Right up front, we know that Kazuma is helping a young girl named Haruka trying to find her mother. It's very briefly touched upon that Kazuma and Haruka's mother, Yumi, were once a hot and heavy item. It's mentioned that Kazuma, Yumi, and Nishiki all once attended the same orphanage, but it's never brought to light how deeply attached they all were. There's quite a few plot holes that someone completely new to the series wouldn't be able to grasp, but for those of you who enjoy the Yakuza games, it's easy enough to fill them in.

I think the action scenes are fairly well done--lots of excitement without being overbearing. It's got a lot of quirky elements, much like the side-missions in the games, as it spins three separate tales into one story. It follows the main story of Kazuma and Haruka, along with two other stories about a young teenage couple on a thieving spree and two bank robbers who progressively show incompetence in their attempts to knock over a bank.

I suggest Ryu-Ga-Gotoku lovers give the movie a try. It's not perfect, but it's definitely entertaining, especially the depictions of Goro Majima and Kazuma Kiryu.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Takashi Miike's best April 18, 2014

Was under the assumption Kitamura was going to be in the new blockbuster sci fi space opera as a specific character who turned out to be played by CGI and bought this film to get ready.

Kitamura is great in this movie and would love to see him in other films. Takashi Miike is branching out and is not just The Horror Guy but makes some great Manga and Game adaptation movies. Go see his Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney.

Kind of disappointed about the sci fi blockbuster though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun movie if you're already a Yakuza fan January 7, 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This movie is a loose adaptation of the PlayStation 2 game Yakuza, and if you've played it, it's fun to see some of your favorite game characters acted out in live action.

If you've never played the game, though, I imagine this movie won't hold the same appeal. A lot of back story and the like is glossed over very quickly, presumably because the movie assumes you already know it. And interestingly enough, some of the most important characters in the game's plot only appear very, very briefly in the movie.

So it's not perfect, but it's a fun diversion for fans of the game. Especially how they interpret things like the health power-ups and the Heat gauge.

I liked this movie. I read a bunch of negative reviews before I bought it and I am suprised at how much I enjoyed it. It was a good story and had a lot of entertaining action. It was amusing throughout and kept my interest.
