Editorial Reviews

This disc features the highly effective combination of up-and-coming organist David Pickering, acclaimed composer Daniel E. Gawthrop and the much admired organ of Bales Organ Recital Hall at the University of Kansas, built by the Canadian firm of Hellmuth Wolff and Associates. The stunning acoustics of the hall, built specifically for this organ, and the colorful tonal resources of the instrument allow the inventive and approachable music of Gawthrop to be heard at its best. Pickering's polished and passionate playing give this release both high impact and sustained power.

I have long been a fan of Dan Gawthrop's music, as it is beautifully written, and very worthwhile for the listener. As I said before, it is accesible and is powerful. This disc contains the other two "sketchbooks" out of the four (Books 1 and 3 are on "Exultate" performed by Mary Mozelle). It also has a neat piece called "Four Noble Gases", a four-movement work where each personifies a different noble gas from the table of elements. Overall, it is great music with nice diversity. Dr. Pickering's performance is great, and the performance is enhanced even more by the organ, as the hall it was placed in was built specifically for the organ. You will not be disappointed in this disc.
