4.0 out of 5 stars Treasured traditions rituals and stories, October 15, 2000
This review is from: I Like Being Catholic (Hardcover)
If your a catholic looking for spirtuality this book is not it. While this book does contain some small bites of spirituality, it is mostly a collection of essays and stories from famous and not so famous catholics on why they like being catholic. In this book you will find insights and thoughts about being catholic, from liberal poloticians like Mario Cumo (Who supports abortion "rights" right up to "Partial birth") to the most consevative catholic officals such as the late John Cardinal O'conner most noted for his active prolife teachings.

Subjects covered under this broad umbrella topic include Favorite prayers, traditions and rituals, Saints, and catholic culture among others. In the chapter on catholic culture there is a list of the ten best cathoic movies which I most take issue with. How could anyone make a list of the ten best catholic movies and include in it "ET: The Extra Terrestial" and yet not include "The Sound of Music" is beyond me. Still all in all this is a good book for catholics and noncatholics alike to read on a lazy afternoon, nothing earth shaking just a fun interesting and on occasion enlighting read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read and re-read, October 28, 2000

This review is from: I Like Being Catholic (Hardcover)
This is going out to all of our Catholic friends at Christmas instead of fruit baskets!! Both my wife and I had to force ourselves to start at the beginning, because every page is exceptional.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Encouragement for New Catholics!, May 30, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: I Like Being Catholic (Hardcover)
As a recent Catholic convert, I thought my reasons for liking the Catholic faith were unique! What I found in this book that all my "unique" reasons are shared by many, many other Catholics. It re-confirmed my belief that I made the right choice to become Catholic...and increased my desire to remain Catholic always.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Feel-Good Book, October 19, 2000
This review is from: I Like Being Catholic (Hardcover)
I love this title (and not simply because one of my upcoming children's books is in it). The collection shows the generously open umbrella under which all sorts of Catholics can find shelter, with room enough for all our differences. The book reveals the everyday experience of lived Catholicism: the people, places, and things that make memories, jokes, and treasures to be prized for a lifetime. Just about every Catholic will love this book, and even non-Catholics will find it funny and warm-hearted.

This book brings back all the wonderful things about this oldest of faiths. Even for people who've felt abandoned by the church - it reminds of the wonderment of belief.

whenever I have doubts about my Roman Catholic upbringing and my ongoing commitment to the Faith. These testimonials, lists, vignettes and stories evoke everything that's vital, life-affirming and just plain fun about being Roman Catholic. Yes, folks, Catholicism can be fun! This book reminds me of the ongoing presence of God's love in the vital and warm community, commitment to service and justice, and constant presence of the Divine in daily life that makes up the true Catholic experience. Don't believe the "anti-modernism" hype from some radical traditional reviewers of books like these..."I Like Being Catholic" reaffirms why the Catholic church, despite ongoing trials and tribulations common to all faiths, is still a vital and important presence in today's world. God's love and yes, his sense of humour, shine through in this work. Keep it close to you for those days when your faith might be challenged, when you need a smile, or just when you want to reaffirm, that yes, You like being Catholic! I would also recommend this to anyone who has a spouse, relative or friend who is considering becoming a Catholic or wants to know about the faith. It's also potentially a great book for anyone who has been hurt or alienated by the church and needs some help in coming back to the fold.

3.0 out of 5 stars A delightful book in many respects . . ., February 3, 2009
. . . the only problem being is that some of the contributors could best be described as "Catholic in Name Only".

This collection of thoughts, essays, lists, etc. describes what the contributors love best about their faith tradition. (Individuals who really do come from many different walks of life -- and have varied and divergent opinions on what the Church would consider key issues).

Don't look for doctrine or even spirituality here -- that's not the point of the book. Enjoy the anecdotes, but realize that fidelity to the Magisterium was apparently not required for inclusion!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Like Being A Catholic, September 8, 2008
Believe it or not, this is a replacement for one I used to own and lent to a friend. It brings my faith so much closer because of the way in which those quoted share their Catholicism. I highly recommend it and hope it does for others what it has done for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book About Day-to-Day Catholicism!, July 14, 2007
This collection of delightful recollections and insights from Catholics anchored by their faith in a world increasing without moorings or reference points at all. Everyday Catholics discuss the favorite rituals (private and public), prayers & Saints who nurture their faith. While this book might not please people who see Catholicism primarily as Papal edicts and endless rules & regulations, I believe that most readers will find the journey refreshing, their faith nenewed. It would also be a good read for non-Catholics who don't understand why their friends and neighbors LIKE being Catholic.
