Take two and a half years, four share-houses, 757 op-shop records, a few thousand dollars lost to dodgy housemates, 2565 hours of community library customer service, 20,000 km of round-Australia travel, countless computer crashes and one critical hard-disk failure, and you have a rough diary for the recording process of the new record by Gotye (pronounced 'gore-ti-yeah'). All sounds on the album were collected and assembled or performed by Wally De Backer in bedrooms around Melbourne between 2003 and 2005, and the record was mixed and mastered by Franc Tetaz (Wolf Creek soundtrack, Machine Translations, Architecture in Helsinki) giving it a beautiful hi-fi depth and brilliance that goes beyond Wally's lo-fi gem Boardface (2004). Musically, it's another mixed bag with a subtle thread holding it all together- alt-pop with a broad sonic and thematic pallette. The moments of frustration, dissatisfaction and sadness rendered in the spacey dubs of Puzzle With A Piece Missing, Thanks For Your Time's electro-funk pop and the sumptuous orchestra sounds of Hearts A Mess are countered by the unbridled positivity of Learnalilgivinanlovin's homage to Northern Soul, A Distinctive Sound's turntablist kook and the after-life meditations of The Only Way, driven by a hollywood-pop-meets-psychedelic-dancehall groove.

An album that you will always find something new to enjoy in. Every spin is amazing, every song finds it's way up the play count listing. What at first you don't like you find you eventually love. Unique, chilled out, simple enough to enjoy with company yet expansive enough to listen to on repeat for months with just the company of your headphones. Just buy this album, it's effin-great. I'm glad I stumbled upon it.

What a fantastic discovery! Gotye gives digging for good music a name and meaning! Fans of The Blue Nile, Bent and U.N.K.L.E. alike are bound to be satisfied with "Like Drawing Blood". The work of one guy (Wally De Backer), Gotye's sound in this album has a range that is quite unlike most acts you run into.

He sometimes plays reggae ("Puzzle with a Piece Missing"), sometimes pop ("Thanks for Your Time" sounds quite like Justin Timberlake) and then he can come up with a sound like a sixties pop act like does in "Learnalilgivinanlovin". But the real power of the album is where he delivers hip-hop power like Gorillaz would do ("Distinctive Sound", "Seven Hours with a Backseat Driver") or a sound that clearly reminds that of Paul Buchanan (with The Blue Nile), as in "Night Drive" or the closing track.

All in all, it's not your regular cup of coffee, which is great, because the range he covers will keep you entertained all through the album and wanting more of his great music when you are done with it.

I dont write reviews generally unless something really piises me off (which is rare) or when something is exceptional. Here it is exceptional. Five stars...tough because certain songs are worth more but others worth a littles less, just weaker than the rest (like night drive, didn't adore it). But when you listen to "hearts a mess" and "puzzle with a piece missing" and "the only way" I cant in good conscious deny the fifth star. I merely dont want this to get percieved as another thoughtless fanatic. This CD is outstanding. The group plays with reggae, pop, some east indian themes all consumed under an alternative umbrella. itunes didnt have it so I bought it from Amazon and it was shipped from Australia for about 23 bucks. Other places were charging upwards of $45.

Worth it. now when i make mixed cds for friends, Gotye steals the show and because itunes doesnt have it yet, they all think I'm this brilliant music person.
