1.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful music, abysmal encoding April 2, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
Music: 5 if you like this style of music. 1 if you like high fidelity MP3s.

If you appreciate Gotye's music, have good ears and a good audio system, DO NOT purchase these MP3s. They are encoded at 128kb/s, which badly under-samples the music. This puzzels me since all my other music from Amazon is sampled at 256kb/s. At the lower sample rate some portions of the program are very perceivably distorted and cannot be ignored with a good stereo and quiet listening conditions; these MP3 may be adequate for environments such as in the car. If you care about good production values, I recommend you buy the CD and do your own ripping.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great eclectic music blend from down under! March 24, 2007
What a fantastic discovery! Gotye gives digging for good music a name and meaning! Fans of The Blue Nile, Bent and U.N.K.L.E. alike are bound to be satisfied with "Like Drawing Blood". The work of one guy (Wally De Backer), Gotye's sound in this album has a range that is quite unlike most acts you run into.

He sometimes plays reggae ("Puzzle with a Piece Missing"), sometimes pop ("Thanks for Your Time" sounds quite like Justin Timberlake) and then he can come up with a sound like a sixties pop act like does in "Learnalilgivinanlovin". But the real power of the album is where he delivers hip-hop power like Gorillaz would do ("Distinctive Sound", "Seven Hours with a Backseat Driver") or a sound that clearly reminds that of Paul Buchanan (with The Blue Nile), as in "Night Drive" or the closing track.

All in all, it's not your regular cup of coffee, which is great, because the range he covers will keep you entertained all through the album and wanting more of his great music when you are done with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The new King of cut-and-paste May 19, 2007
By andyc
Melbourne, Australia is becoming a hotbed of this type of art, what with the Avalanches and Wally/Gauthier "Gotye" de Bakker. The aim is to produce lush, witty, captivating music by clever editing of huge numbers of multilayered samples. Gotye not only succeeds brilliantly, but also affectionately pastiches a huge range of different genres over the tracks of this album. His previous release "Boardface" was good, but sometimes, the pastiches were a little too close to identifiable source tracks. "Like Drawing Blood" is more polished, to the point where the Gotye tracks are more secure in their own identities. Energy levels are generally higher than the first album, too.

For me, the high spots are the beautiful ballad "Heart's a Mess" (which also has an excellent video) and the satirical "Thanks for your Time": truly a song for the early 21st century ("You have been placed in a queue - your call is valuable, it's so very valuable..."). Others may be more smitten with the driving, modal indie rock of "The Only Way", the soul-influenced "Learnalilgivinanlovin", the drums-n-organ-n-fx of "A Distinctive Sound", or the ethereal Europop of "Night Drive", which is reminiscent of Air. But the whole album is highly listenable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love
Gotye is an amazing artist. I love his use of orchestral backgrounds. I love his lyrics and he is one of the better male vocalists out right now, in my opinion.
