More About the Author

When she was in the fourth grade, Hannah Rae couldn't fall asleep one night. She climbed out of bed, padded down the hallway to her parents' bedroom, and said, "Mom, I can't sleep." To which her mother replied, "Make up a story in your head." So Hannah Rae created a cast of characters, and a setting, and a plot... and to this day, the first thing she thinks about when she snuggles under the covers each night are those characters and that setting. But the plot is always changing.

Like A Flip Turn is Hannah Rae's first published book. It will not be her last.

"Like A Flip Turn" is one of those books that can connect with nearly any age group. It's a funny, touching, and gripping story that follows multiple characters throughout a school year and overcome their individual hardships, which is something anyone can relate to.

The character development is well-paced and deep, with surprises abound that will undoubtedly catch you off guard throughout the book. You really gain a connection and an understanding for what these characters are going through - even if you haven't experienced the exact situations they have. There were multiple times when some life-lesson-truth-bomb was dropped by a character and I just had to put the book down for a second and be like..."yeah, that's kinda like this other thing that happened to me. How eye-opening." And it helps you deal with stuff like that. In the past and in the future.

With super loveable characters, an engaging & winding story, humor, tragedy, romance, life lessons, and a little bit of fantasy, "Like A Flip Turn" truly encapsulates what it means grow up, move on, and live life to the fullest.

I loved this novel! The author is exceptionally talented. Her descriptions and figurative language really bring her invented town and school to life. The characters are well-drawn, and the dialogue has a splendid, lyrical ring. I could smell the flowers, feel the water, and hear the hum of bike tires on pavement. She weaves several story lines together into a satisfying tapestry of small-town Pennsylvania life. The author is also obviously an animal-lover, and the creatures in this novel play larger roles than many readers would expect. It is a delightful read, and I eagerly await her next work! Fans of "urban fantasy" and "magical realism" will find a new favorite author in Hannah Rae.

Like a Flip Turn by Hannah Rae was an easy story for me to get addicted to. The voices in which the characters spoke were humorous and quite quirky. This caught my attention while I was reading because I enjoy sarcastic persons; therefore, I hardly put this book down. This story also caught my interest because it was written through the eyes of three different characters. This caused the story to never become dull; each chapter started a new event for one of the characters. In the end of the book, all of the characters were tied together seamlessly. If you enjoy literature that can spark every emotion without leaving the plot line, Like a Flip Turn is the book for you.

The imagery in this book immediately drew me in: I felt like I could just close my eyes and picture this small town that was ever so quaint and friendly, but bursting at the seams with secrets and stories. The author's deft interweaving of character plot lines was masterful, to say the least. I was always pleasantly surprised to see the intricate ways in which the characters' forward motion often relied upon others' needs for self-realization. If you are a fan of Maeve Binchy's characterization or Sarah Addison Allen's imagery and magical realism, you should definitely give this book a try. I think you'll probably love it.

I selected this book because, as a swimmer, I thought it might have interesting characters, and it does! Although the plot has surprisingly little to do with a pool or competitive swimming, I was immediately drawn into Jenny’s life. Then, the switch in perspective to Lydia drew me in further until I practically had to fast-forward to solve the mystery of Old Lady Gallagher. I loved the backdrop of a small town; magic never sounded so real! What a fun way to spend my evenings last week.

Like the quote in the dedication, I would have to agree that there "is magic in this one." I appreciate this book in all of its intelligent, lyrical, imaginative, magical, and refreshing goodness. I loved that the writing left me feeling like I'd just watched a movie. This is a book that one should read no fewer than two times due to the fact that it is so cleverly written that something interesting was most likely missed during the first read through. Awarded five sparkling stars!

Impressive first novel! It was fun to become acquainted with such likable characters, their lives, and their small town. The author's credible and compelling depiction of a caring young educator and her middle school age students was a highlight for me. An opportunity to return to Lake Caywood in a future novel would be most welcome.

I loved the character development in this book. When I read, I like an author to connect me with people as well as the plot. This book treats the reader like an intelligent consumer and I appreciate that. I want to see a book two focused on the main character's mom because she seems to have a story to tell too!
