How to Start a Fire
Anna, Kate and Georgiana have been bosom buddies since their salad days at University of California at Santa Cruz: This novel follows the three adventurous women into middle age. Read about the author, Lisa Lutz

Book Description

Lake Caywood is a place where magic happens, and magic is exactly what the three women in Like A Flip Turn need.

Jenny, having just relocated from the west coast to the east, holds the hope that this new town will result in a new start: one that will allow her to forget a broken relationship and the emotional abuse that went with it. She finds a friend in happy-go-lucky Petey Goode, a quirky young man who seems always to know what a person needs most, whether it be a lift on his tandem bicycle or a song played on his cello. With his help, and the kind words of a few important kids, Jenny takes the steps to get back on her feet.

But Jenny’s not the only one in Lake Caywood struggling to create a new start. Twelve-year-old Lydia exists in a world of denial, unable to face the hand she's been dealt, and until she’s willing to acknowledge the loss that has been given her, she cannot begin to learn to cope. Fortunately, there is a Ria. A foul-mouthed therapist who knows how to reach the heart of the matter, Lydia is lucky to have her in her life.

And then there’s Old Lady Gallagher… Although she wants nothing more than to be left alone, the town is simply unwilling to grant her this wish, and so she keeps to herself, rarely leaving her house at the top of the hill. There are visitors, though, every now and again. They seek her services, appearing on her doorstep because they’ve a desire that needs to be filled. Ruby Gallagher always helps, but it’s possible that these visitors offer more to her than she to them.

Although never solidly connected, these three women rely on one another – and help one another – to overcome obstacles too great to be tackled alone. Comprised of colorful characters, intricately woven plots, and a tightly knit theme of coping with loss, Like A Flip Turn is a beautiful patchwork that readers will want to curl up with again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming and riveting to the last page September 9, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
"Like A Flip Turn" is one of those books that can connect with nearly any age group. It's a funny, touching, and gripping story that follows multiple characters throughout a school year and overcome their individual hardships, which is something anyone can relate to.

The character development is well-paced and deep, with surprises abound that will undoubtedly catch you off guard throughout the book. You really gain a connection and an understanding for what these characters are going through - even if you haven't experienced the exact situations they have. There were multiple times when some life-lesson-truth-bomb was dropped by a character and I just had to put the book down for a second and be like..."yeah, that's kinda like this other thing that happened to me. How eye-opening." And it helps you deal with stuff like that. In the past and in the future.

With super loveable characters, an engaging & winding story, humor, tragedy, romance, life lessons, and a little bit of fantasy, "Like A Flip Turn" truly encapsulates what it means grow up, move on, and live life to the fullest.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fresh New Talent! October 31, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved this novel! The author is exceptionally talented. Her descriptions and figurative language really bring her invented town and school to life. The characters are well-drawn, and the dialogue has a splendid, lyrical ring. I could smell the flowers, feel the water, and hear the hum of bike tires on pavement. She weaves several story lines together into a satisfying tapestry of small-town Pennsylvania life. The author is also obviously an animal-lover, and the creatures in this novel play larger roles than many readers would expect. It is a delightful read, and I eagerly await her next work! Fans of "urban fantasy" and "magical realism" will find a new favorite author in Hannah Rae.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful read! December 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Like a Flip Turn by Hannah Rae was an easy story for me to get addicted to. The voices in which the characters spoke were humorous and quite quirky. This caught my attention while I was reading because I enjoy sarcastic persons; therefore, I hardly put this book down. This story also caught my interest because it was written through the eyes of three different characters. This caused the story to never become dull; each chapter started a new event for one of the characters. In the end of the book, all of the characters were tied together seamlessly. If you enjoy literature that can spark every emotion without leaving the plot line, Like a Flip Turn is the book for you.

The imagery in this book immediately drew me in: I felt like I could just close my eyes and picture this small town that was ever so quaint and friendly, but bursting at the seams with secrets and stories. The author's deft interweaving of character plot lines was masterful, to say the least. I was always pleasantly surprised to see the intricate ways in which the characters' forward motion often relied upon others' needs for self-realization. If you are a fan of Maeve Binchy's characterization or Sarah Addison Allen's imagery and magical realism, you should definitely give this book a try. I think you'll probably love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved the backdrop of a small town September 28, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I selected this book because, as a swimmer, I thought it might have interesting characters, and it does! Although the plot has surprisingly little to do with a pool or competitive swimming, I was immediately drawn into Jenny’s life. Then, the switch in perspective to Lydia drew me in further until I practically had to fast-forward to solve the mystery of Old Lady Gallagher. I loved the backdrop of a small town; magic never sounded so real! What a fun way to spend my evenings last week.

Impressive first novel! It was fun to become acquainted with such likable characters, their lives, and their small town. The author's credible and compelling depiction of a caring young educator and her middle school age students was a highlight for me. An opportunity to return to Lake Caywood in a future novel would be most welcome.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved the character development in this book August 10, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I loved the character development in this book. When I read, I like an author to connect me with people as well as the plot. This book treats the reader like an intelligent consumer and I appreciate that. I want to see a book two focused on the main character's mom because she seems to have a story to tell too!

You can hear the water swish by and feel its tingle as you turn pages in chapter one. Imagery abounds throughout this book- lending delight to the senses. These characters come to life as their individual stories entwine one another. I love the magic!
Can't wait for Hannah Rae to publish her next novel!

More About the Author

When she was in the fourth grade, Hannah Rae couldn't fall asleep one night. She climbed out of bed, padded down the hallway to her parents' bedroom, and said, "Mom, I can't sleep." To which her mother replied, "Make up a story in your head." So Hannah Rae created a cast of characters, and a setting, and a plot... and to this day, the first thing she thinks about when she snuggles under the covers each night are those characters and that setting. But the plot is always changing.

Like A Flip Turn is Hannah Rae's first published book. It will not be her last.
