4.0 out of 5 stars From J. Kaye's Book Blog, December 24, 2008

Rob Jackson receives a call telling him that his estranged brother has died. Rob catches a flight so that he can attend his brother's funeral. An old wound will be opened and he'll face a past betrayal from two people he loved the most, his first love and his brother. This is a beautiful story about love, forgiveness, and starting over again.

I found Cory's writing unique as well as the story. The story was a far cry from predictable with a surprise ending. My only complaint - a seriously minor one - was in the middle (ish) part of the book. It hit a sort of dry spot or maybe I'd just had enough of Janet's behavior. I really love Rob and felt a little defensive towards him, especially during the funeral.

More about this story can be continued on in Cory's second book, SHATTERED.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not your typical love story, November 18, 2008
By J. Shetrone (Christiansburg, VA United States) - See all my reviews

Like Glass is Matthew Cory's debut novel, and I think he did quite a good job. This is a love story, but it doesn't follow the path you would expect. When Rob get the call that the brother he hasn't seen or spoken to in 8 years is dead, his life completely changes. Rob himself is an imperfect character... He allows 4 short days in his life to completely change the course of it. Personally, I thought his reaction was a little bit overblown. I could understand it being the last straw with his brother -- after all, he'd been mistreating him for a long time -- but Rob's reaction to losing a girl he'd only known for 4 days was a little much. But as the novel continues, it starts to feel to me like it's supposed to be overblown, perhaps a sign of an underlying mental illness? Regardless, Rob takes quite a journey through this novel, one filled with a little love and a lot of loss, and at the end I think he has become a much better man. Though it's a strong effort for a debut, I can see that the author has some room to grow, and I look forward to his second novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great start for a new writer., November 10, 2008
Once I started this book I didn't want to put it down. I very much enjoyed looking at a relationship between a man and a woman from the man's perspective. Many books (at least that I have read) that are more about the pain of dealing with a family and a love interest are written by women about women - showing mainly their point of view. This is a fun look at the other side of the story.

I must say that when it got to a certain point of the book I was a little lost. I didn't know if it was flash forwards, flash backs, things just happening in his mind, dreams etc. Eventually it all became clear to me - but for me that was a little disconcerting.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book. Life isn't perfect and neither are people and being able to address maybe where you went wrong or where someone else went wrong and forgive them is something we should all have.
