For me this album epitomizes why I love MDB. Take all that raw energy found in the Metal Music scene and slow it down and add a couple of good musicians and then add one final devastating touch, the wretched vocals of Aaron. The musicians are certainly a step above the typical level of musicians in this style. Aaron is an absolutely master at delivering pure emotional power through his voice. You will live his life, love, death and dark perception of his world.

For those of you who are new to MDB you should know that MDB's style can change widely from album to album. I love the Goth Metal Gloomy Type Albums but still do listen to the other more traditional Death Metal Albums. I enjoy both but feel that without a doubt it is this bands and Aarons ability to slow down their music and cross the divide between the gothic and metal styles that makes this band special.

Another thing I love about this band is that they don't play a concert when they don't want to. They tour far less than other bands simply because they don't want their performance & their enjoyment of it to be anything less than 100%. RESPECT. This album is a must have. I would also recommend the anthology of MDB part I and II *Meisterwerk * This will give you an excellent introduction to MDB but also only half the picture. I must say I rarely play some of there less gothic albums because why would I when I could put on one of their others. You might also try the new one, Songs of Darkness, Words of Light as it is similar to Like Gods of The Sun being more accessible then there other albums if you are coming from a non-metal background. WARNING if you only like Doom metal or Death Metal rather invest in some of MDB's other albums, this one is not for you. All I can say is this album is brilliant... the BEST that My Dying Bride has to offer. Just writing this is making me want to go and play it right now. It is like Portishead, for those of you who know, in the respect that it is a classic.

The album is erotic and dark drowned in the beautiful and haunting vocals of Aaron. Another thing which makes this album so accessible is the Aaron's decision to use clean vocals. You can actually hear what he is saying. Don't you ever get tired of such harsh vocals where you are not even sure if the guy can sing because the vocals are so harsh? After a while I did and that makes Aaron and this album like a breath of fresh air. Finally someone has done it right.

"Like Gods of The Sun" is one, if not my, favorite cd. The opening song "Like Gods of The Sun" is slow and may not hold interest very well until it kicks in and here comes the double bass drums! "A Kiss To Remember" is a very hauntingly beautiful song, and very deeply emotional. "For You" is another deeply emotional song. "Here In The Throat", is a great song filled with angst and bitterness. The most hauntingly beautiful tracks on this cd is "For My Fallen Angel". All I can and need to say about this song is it is one of the most beautiful orchestrated peices i have ever heard. The guitars on this cd are very much up front and clear. Everything is equalized perfectly and you can hear everything clearly. The Violinist on this cd brings up very sorrowful emotions and it really gets to you. If you like Type O Negative, or anykind of orchestrated dark peices of music, My Dying Bride is an excellent choice.

I've had heard some songs from the album, such as LGOTS,
For you.A kiss to Remember,For my Fallen Angel and i had almost an idea of what it could contain:heavy and melodic guitars, as is the MDB standard, haunting violins and keyboards by the musical genious Martin Powell(such a shame and loss he left) and an overall dark atmosphere. The lyrics not at all depressing, but God-questioning sometimes, depicting the malice of the world, Aarons dissapointment with the current status of our world, erotic and dark.

Let's come to Aarons vocals. I have to recognise Aaron as a great singer, who evolves through the years. He has a nice-positioned voice, deep, not extravagant and not abused. So far for his clean vocals. My only dessappointment is that this album is totally devoid of harsh vocals, something I was expecting for so old a release.

So, I recommend it to any fan of My Dying Bride, but not to anyone who wants to hear the brutal harsh singing of Aaron.

I give this album 5 stars due to its musical ingenuity and quality, and also because MDB are worth it.

I just got it in the mail a couple of days ago and I'm memerized by it. It was everything and more I hoped for. Somewhat on the same lines as Angel and the Dark River in sound, it is different in the way there are more songs on the album with shorter and more melodic tracks. The guitar sound is also very different. It is a very processed sound with very clean distortion and has more treble then bass.. Reminds me of a early 90's band "Anacrucsis". The voilins and keyboards are well played and the bass guitar is excellent. My favorite track on it is "A Kiss to Remember". One of the best songs I've heard from this band. The whole cd is good. There is not one average part in any of these songs. They glare right at you in the face and with passion.

After hearing "Turn Loose the Swans", "Angel & the Dark River" and "The Dreadful Hours" I though My Dying Bride could do no wrong. All three albums were masterfuly written peices of darkness. The songs were chalenging and exciting as well as imotional and passionate.
However "Like Gods of the Sun" is different. On this album it seems as if all the emoition, passion and creativity were squeezed into half the songs, and the others were left empty or half done. LGotS contains one of MDB's best songs, possibly THE best in "A Kiss to Remember". With beutiful violin solos, slow grindy doom parts, dark slow vocals, a haunting piano interlude and some unearthly drumming the song is damn near perfict! Theres also the tear jerking "For My Fallen Angel". As Aaron slowly speaks the tragic epitaph for his lost love touching violins and keys play a backround good enough for the saddest ending to the saddest movie. There is also the title track wich contains some real dark vocals over killer keyboards. "The Dark Carress" is very good too.
However the rest of the album isn't nearly as good. The problem is that MDB are playing to what seems to be Aaron's weakness, singing over fast rhythems. If he growls it works but it surly doesn't work with the singing. Songs like "All Swept Away" and "Here in the Throat" contain some good slow parts, but they're few and far between. Putting "It Will Come" on the album twice was pointless, sience the remix looses its novelty after a few listens. Then theres "Grace Unhearing" which is stright up terrible. The vocals are just unbearably annoying.
Over all the album is just lacking. Two great songs, two very good songs, several ok songs and a few bombs. The other three MDB albums I have are simply better then this. Get the other ones first and then if you realy like them get this one cuz "For My Fallen Angel" and "A Kiss to Remember" are MDB essentials.

I just recently started getting into MDB this semester in college. In fact I am a relatively new listener to REAL metal, beginning to purchase and constantly listening to anything from Anathema to Carcass to the occasional Jungle Rot -- all an evolutionary step forward from MTVs mallcore rock. MDB has become one of my favorite bands from any musical genre. This CD is dark, slow, heavy, emotional, and damned fine listening. I own "The Angel and the Dark River" (Limited) also, and I recommend this one more. I can't offer the long-time fan's perspective, but I can appreciate what I like, and until I get further MDB albums, I say this one should suit anyone with an interest in dark/death metal.

My Dying Bride is, without a doubt, the most brilliant doom/goth metal band on the face of the planet, perfecting the art of blending eerie, orchestral passages with dark. oppressive guitar riffs so that each song floats with hypnotizing grace, yet rumbles ominously with deep aggression. My Dying Bride embraces pain, suffering and fear with its captivating, malevolent sound, built of hauntingly beautiful instrumental passages found amidst a dark, somber pool of crushing rhythms, pain-soaked vocals, and passionate, heartfelt lyrics. Last year's The Angel And The Dark River didn't impress me as much as the critics thought (and not nearly as much as Turn Loose the Swans, of course), but Like Gods Of The Sun reigns supreme. Etched with deep-rooted emotion and fascinating musicianship that tugs at the inner fabric of the soul, Like Gods Of The Sun is as beautiful as it is lethal. Submerse yourself in the intense, atmospheric swirl of the title track, "A Kiss To Remember," "All Swept Away," "For You" and "It Will Come (Nightmare)."

I have no idea why there are only two reviews of this masterpiece, when it's been out since 1996. As far the other two reviews, completely disregard them, as they are wrong. This album is a masterpiece, with only a few, tiny flaws, that can be easily overlooked and forgotten. It was the last album with the original line-up, and was a progression of their earlier efforts. Some have described it as goth, yet MDB never identified themselves as goth; nor was it their intention. It is a brooding, melodic, raging, guitar-driven, heavy metal doom album, with organ, piano, and violin to give it a funereal and sometimes romantic, yet depressing ambiance that some have wrongly described as being gothic. If you've never had the priviledge of hearing MDB, start here. And where are my fellow brothers? Why only two reviews? Speak up! Speak up!

I try to be open minded towards all types of music...as long as it sounds good of course and has feeling behind it, its enjoyable to me. ive always liked hard, doom metal but even if you dont like that genre, you will still probably enjoy this. the music is hard, but the pace isnt always fast. in fact, much of the time its very slow. but the vocal style is what really sold this album for me. at times it sounds as if hes nearly crying while hes singing. that might sound gay, but the vocals compliment the music perfectly. and alot of doom bands sing about hate, the devil, hypocracies, etc. not MDB. they sing of life and love and with a mix of hard music it blends surprisingly well. my fav song from this album is for you. at about 4 mins 30 secs the songs kicks into overdrive and then stops, and kicks in again around 5.30. all songs blend well on the album and feel as they belong together. in all, try this album. i cant believe it hasnt gotten more acclaim. it truly rocks but in a poetic type way.
