This book speaks to God's miracles and puts denial in your face. Be prepared to love the book and depending upon your level of belief it may catapult you forward or it may be to direct at some points. Either way, it is an extremely enjoyable quick read!

I was deeply touched by the simplistic faith of these backwards people from a small island in Indonesia. Even the children, as young as six, took the entire Bible at face value and began to travel through the jungle to nearby villages to tell others about God and His saving power. The miracles that transpired, many people of today would scoff at and say that they are fantasies or the figment of someone's imagination. But as Mel puts it, "I praise God that no matter what the scholars in America might say, we in Indonesia have experienced all the things in Mark 16 by the power of His Holy Spirit." Thank God there are still those who believe the entire Bible. God sent Mel to America as a missionary and until he landed at L.A. airport, he had no comprehension of why. He felt that Indonesia still needed missionaires from America until he realized the motto on our coins was no longer true. The motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST."

I read this book many years ago and it is still as powerful today as it was back then. Mel Tari is a friend of Roland & Heidi Baker's in Mozambique. When I read this book back in 1992 the presence of God filled my room in such a mighty way to confirm that what I was reading was true. You will not be disappointed with this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars It changed my life, October 25, 2001

This book was very instrumental in my life at a young age, perhaps 15 years old. This was back in 1972. While reading it, I asked God to baptize me in the Holy Spirit, and it happened. I also received the gift of tongues at the same time. I believe that what Mel Tari has written for Christians is in some ways similar to what Bill Wilson wrote for alcoholics in his famous book entitled "Alcoholics Anonymous". It ranks right behind Scripture! He is so loving and non-Western in his approach, just simple faith. Of course, Jesus did ask us to come to Him as little children. Mel Tari does this.

How much I love to re-read this book! I used many stories for my Sunday school class discussion. I highly recommend this book to all Christians from any denomination. The words in the Bible give life; this book opens up your heart to receive the life.

A young Presbyterian Church pre-med student is confronted by charismatic revival in Indonesia in the 1970s. He follows the perceived call of God on his life and goes into missionary work, participating in a series of lessons of how the Spirit moves and dealing with both good and malevolent spiritual issues. This book is colorful on many levels, easy and enjoyable to read, simple and challenging: Do you really believe these supernatural things happen today or no? Walking on water, water turned into wine for Communion, visions, dreams etc. It is a remarkable account of what God can do in areas of this world where conveniences we are accustomed to in the West are lacking. This book polarized people theologically in the 70s and thirty years plus later is still a challenge. My belief is God CAN when necessary, and in Indonesia in the 70s (and more so even today) we need the truly miraculous. But Tari's book shines in that it is Christ-centered and Gospel true, not selling sensationalism but preaching repentance and salvation. It is one of a kind, which makes it (even more so 30 years later) that much more credible.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was the start of a desire in my life for more of GOD in and through my life. The events described are miraculous and very inspiring. The simple raw faith of these believers is what grabs you. The brothers and sisters written about in this book took Jesus at His Word with no doubt that He that saved and filled them would also perform His Word.
On arriving in America, the author new something was wrong. His insights on the faith of his country's people and ours are eye openers. I highly recommend this book. GOD bless JB

5.0 out of 5 stars Ignites a fire of faith and desire for God, June 22, 2007

My heart longs for revival and renewal in greater measure - the real Jesus movement - salvation poured out and the earth filled with His glory.
Reading this book reminds me that God is able, willing and desirous to do so - All He wants is simple, childlike faith.

This book is about a 1960's Jesus revival in Indonesia - the revival began in a Presbyterian church and spreads throughout the country. Miracle after miracle occurred, all in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth - including such awe inspiring ones as: 1000's at a time coming to Jesus, literal walking on water, raising the dead, healing the sick, preaching the gospel to the poor, staying dry while walking in a rainstorm (without an umbrella), being led by lights at night and a cloud by day, and so many other God miracles.

I believe that God is eager to inhabit His people - people who are earnestly seeking Him. This is the hour. This is the time for God to pour forth His Spirit, bringing many to repentance and into the fullness of Christ Jesus. Revival is coming - heed His voice and follow Him - all of His ways are good - He is faithful and true. Be holy. Pursue Him from a pure heart - lose your life so that you can find it in Christ. Yes. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life and no one can go to the Father but through Him. Yield to Him and surrender your life to Him - and you will find rest for your soul.

I had read this book more than 15 years ago, and someone gave me a copy within the last year, and it is as powerful now as it was then. If you are a believer it provokes you to rise up out of complacency and do the works Jesus has commanded us to do. He is the God of the United States. He is just looking for believers. The signs and wonders is what's needed to usher in this end time harvest. They don't need to be talked into believing in God. It needs to be demonstrated. I have purchased and sent copies to people I believe want to demonstrate God power, and to stir them out of complacency. We have so much in America. The believers just have the Word, they believed the Word, and saw the Word become a reality in their everyday lives. Wake up body of Christ. There is a work still to be done. Get in position to be part of and used for this endtime harvest. Let's be about kingdom business so the King can return for His Church.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, September 1, 2007
This review is from: Like a Mighty Wind (Paperback)
This book really helps you understand the Holy Spirit. A must read for all Christians period.

In the 70's God poured out his Holy Spirit in a small conservative, humble and powerless Presbyterian church on a small island in Indonesia.

The book accounts the results afterwards: many were saved, people were miraculously healed, the dead were raised, and they crossed a 30ft deep river by walking on top of it.

This book will really increase your faith in the power of God for today.

Mel Tari is such a wonderful and humble man of God. I learned more about deliverance in his 2 page description of it than any other book could have told me. His agenda is the Kingdom of God.
