Book Description

September 1, 2007
Like Only Yesterday is Donald E. Noble's story of growing up in a country wracked by the Great Depression and his struggle to get a college education against great odds. To overcome perceived handicaps, Noble developed a personal code that led him to work twenty percent more than his peers throughout his business career. A nostalgic look back at a vanishing America--a largely rural country of farms and close-knit families--this book is also a tribute to the free enterprise system by a man who started as a bank messenger and through hard work and perseverance rose to head one of America's most admired corporations. Noble details the phenomenal growth of Rubbermaid Incorporated and the philosophy and principles that fueled that growth. More than one man's life story, it is a handbook for young managers that is filled with practical, commonsense advice on how to succeed in business by really trying.

Editorial Reviews

Review

I am impressed with Don Noble's look at the evolution of Rubbermaid from a toy balloon maker to America's "Most Admired Corporation." From his personal perspective on the growth of Rubbermaid under his leadership as Chief Executive Officer, he offers valuable insights for young managers. --Paul H. Smucker, Chairman, The J.M. Smucker Company

Don Noble was my mentor in business. I owe him most of what I know about all aspects of business: technical, strategic, and moral. The success we had in creating twenty-four public companies in diverse markets, each becoming a leader in its market, is mostly due to Don's experience and wisdom. I will never forget him. --Georege Hatsopoulos, Founder and Chairman Emeritus, Thermo Electron Corp.

Don Noble came into our lives first as a director in our company and then as a shareholder, who financed us through the difficult years. What he left us with, however, was a much richer legacy. It was his way of thinking about people that is the source of our success today. --Dee Vaidya, Vice President, CACI, founder and CEO of TechniGraphicS, Inc.
