Madonna: The Sticky & Sweet Tour Trailer

Biography

In the 80s Madonna achieved notoriety for her flagrant sexuality, which saw some tag her as a soft-porn star who happened to sing. She deliberately courted controversy to stay in the limelight, but her songs were so memorable that she would've been a star anyway, and her ever-changing persona has kept her at the top ever since.

Madonna Louise Ciccone Ritchie, better known as Madonna, has been many… Read more in Amazon's Madonna Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Like A Prayer From The Goddess, May 19, 2003

Busy Body (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Like a Prayer (12 Dance Mix) 7.50 (Audio CD)
Madonna returned to the charts in March 1989 for the first time in 15 months. She was back, and bigger than ever with the amazing single Like A Prayer. The song caused a lot of controversy before its release because of the promotional video. This all resulted in massive worldwide sales of the single Like A Prayer, which topped the charts in both the UK and US. The album of the same name was also a transatlantic multi-million bestselling chart topper, shifting 15 million copies worldwide.

Like A Prayer opens with the heavy strumming of a guitar that gets heavier by the second. This is then cut off as an old heavy door is slammed shut. The choir then chant in the background as Madonna sings the first few classic lines of the song, "Life is a mystery. Everyone must stand all alone. I hear you call my name, and it feels like...home." The song then dies down for about 10 seconds before exploding into the amazing chorus with the lyrics, "When you call my name, it's like a little prayer. I'm down on my knees, I wanna take you there. In the midnight hour, I can feel your power. Just like a prayer, you know I'll take you there." The song then gracefully bows down as Madonna sings, "I hear your voice, it's like an angel sighing. I have no choice, I hear your voice, feels like flying. I close my eyes, oh God I think I'm falling out of the sky, I close my eyes. Heaven help me!" The song then picks up with its fantastic chorus, as the choir are ever present. The song then bows down again as Madonna sings, "Like a child, you whisper softly to me. You're in control, just like a child, now I'm dancing. It's like a dream, no end and no beginning. You're here with me, it's like a dream, let the choir sing." The choir then sings away to the chorus a couple of times before the song really gets going as a killer beat kicks in and makes the song seem very serious where Madonna sings the first verse again. She has more anger and emotion to her voice which makes the song so much better. The song then gets out of its dark patch as the choir lift the song to new heights, before the song then dips again when Madonna begins to sing. The song then rises for one final time as Madonna wails her heart out with her trusty choir. The song then finishes, and you know that you've just experienced Madonna's best song ever.

The video to Like A Prayer caused huge controversy way back when this song was released. Pepsi had agreed to pay Madonna $5 million if she would star in their promotional adverts, and in return they could use Like A Prayer in the advert. This deal was made before Pepsi bosses had seen the video to the song. Once they did, and religious groups hit the roof, they pulled the ad campaign - and Madonna kept her cash. The video featured Madonna in many religious poses that involved interracial pleasure, burning crosses, stigmata, statues crying blood, and a black Jesus Christ. The Vatican also condemned Madonna, and even went as far as to try and ban the superstar from ever setting foot in Italy again. All this controversy made Madonna pots of cash and saw her record sales soar all over the world. Madonna had proved yet again she knew how to sell records and make money. Later in 1989, Madonna won the award for Best Video at MTV's Video Music Awards, an award sponsored coincidentally by Pepsi! Madonna made sure to thank Pepsi on stage by saying, "And I'd like to thank Pepsi! For causing so much controversy!" Anyway, Like A Prayer is Madonna's ultimate classic hit song and you'd be a fool to miss out on it. A big two thumb up for this song!

5.0 out of 5 stars Like A Prayer, August 9, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Like a Prayer (12 Dance Mix) 7.50 (Audio CD)
Like A Prayer is my favourite song of all-time, and definately the best of her whole career. My favourite mix on here is the Churchapella, it's beautiful. The 12" Dance Mix and The 7" Remix/Edit were also brilliant. The Dance Mix was the version the Immaculate Collection CD was based on. I recommend you pick up: this single, the Like A Prayer album, the Immaculate Collection album.

1 of the mixes here was featured in the Pepsi "make a wish" commercial. the intro was hauntingly powerful. some nights later i was at Mars(west side nyc), the dj mixed up the 12" and played it continuously for more than half an hour. i danced till my knees dropped(mercy). the next day i had to run downtown to get my own copy.
