Most Helpful Customer Reviews

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Frederick Rudofsky on February 12, 2000
Format: Audio CD
One of the great things about being a live music fan is discovering greatness instantaneously. The four musicians on this cd are tops on their instruments in the Albany, NY area, and when they got together in 1997 as Scotty Mac and the Rockin' Bonnevilles they made a big impact on the local and soon state music scene, playing out in Syracuse and hitting the Big Apple a few times, too.. (At this point, I'll confess that I've seen them play over 50 times and they are close friends of mine). This independent release has the warm full sound that even the big name blues acts fail to achieve in the studio. Featuring a mix of distinctive originals and inspired cover choices, this is a must-have cd.The first cut is a swing-blues original by Scotty Mac that always gets the dance floor going. What follows are a gritty rumba, a wickedly scarey Lonesome Sundown cover, a ripping rocker, a Louis Jordan cover that actually puts B.B. King's recent rendition to shame (and I say this as a fervent BB fan), a pair of witty Ted Hennessey originals about domestic tension and a roving eye, a powerful Rod Piazza cover, a brilliant instrumental that will appeal to fans of Big Walter and Louis Myers, a wonderful oldie (post-nuclear bragging song about "Thirteen Women"), a moving tribute to William Clarke, and a harrowing yet funny Hennessey original about the the rough nights one can experience with the law. Ted can play a ferocious harp with the best of them (he just opened a show for Tom Townsley and Carey Bell last month). Scotty Mac is an amazing guitarist, able to play rhythm and lead so well that a few years ago he backed Clarence Hollimon and Carol Fran to their approval and later went toe-toe with Joe Louis Walker in a midnight jam.Read more ›
