my all time favorite album, i play it almost everyday. if you are comtemplating the purchase of your first ella fitzgerald cd, this is great place to start. it is beautiful music that any adult listener can enjoy.a fine collection of jazz and pop standards sung with incredible beauty. it must have been a songwriters dream to have ella sing one of your compositions.she respects the melody and composers intentions while still improvising with taste and imagination.while difficult any cuts my favorites are there's a lull in my life, i tought about you and what's new. trust me, you will love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music, May 2, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Like Someone in Love (Audio CD)
This album is simply gorgeous. Beautiful ballads beautifully sung by a master (forgive the term) of her craft. Anyone interested in Ella Fitzgerald's music should certainly also become familiar with the generous assortment of traditional jazz, swing and uptempo standards she has recorded, but this album is a unique assortment of standards in which Ella manages to perfectly balance the beauty, the melancholy, the hope, the despair, the many shadings of romantic love. Frank DeVol's flawless orchestrations are a perfect complement to a magnificent vocalist at the top of her form.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ballads By One Of The Best, May 26, 2002
By
This review is from: Like Someone in Love (Audio CD)
There's not too much more to say that hasn't already been said. This album was originally recorded about 1957 and has Stan Getz guesting on about 4 tracks. Although, Ella turned out some fine songbooks, this is the only album (still call them that....since my original was on vinyl) that I have where she sings strictly ballad standards with an orchestral background. Her voice was great, the delivery is smooth and appealing, and the cd is definitely late night music for relaxing or romancing.

If ballads, Ella, standards, vocals with orchestral backgrounds are your thing..... any one or in combination......you can't go wrong with this!

I decided to buy this CD after reading the other reviews. Am I glad I did! This CD contains some great standards, Ella is in perfect voice and Frank DeVols arrangements don't overpower the singer or the material. As an added bonus, Stan Getz plays superbly on four of the songs. This CD just blew me away!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lush Life, February 24, 2007

The best lush Ella Fitzgerald album, orchestrations so creamy it's fattening to listen to it. For the best of the acoustic Ella get the duet lps with Ellis Larkins including her unforgettable ballad reading of "My Heart Belongs to Daddy".

"Like Someone" isn't jazz really, it's velvety pop. But never just sound for the sake of sound, never mere surface noise. Ella F. remains supremely intelligent no matter what the setting is. She was the most versatle of her peers.

I recently moved and forgot this CD back in New York. I miss it as much as my own best friend. This CD captures beauty, love, and the wonders in your soul you never knew may have existed. It's undoubtedly one of the best Ella CD's out there if not THE best.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Different Recording from Ella..., July 17, 2003
This review is from: Like Someone in Love (Audio CD)
This is a unique endevour from Ella. It swings gently, and she records some fairly rare tracks. I love her version of "Close Your Eyes." It swings with a sensuality that is wonderful. The recordings of "I Never Had A Chance," belongs with an after bar time martini, before moving on to something else.

Ella sings with the smoothness of drizzling honey, and warmth of glowing embers. Did I go too far, no not really. I love this album. Every song is a gem and each rendition is all about her dreamy voice. There's no over orchestration or overworked arrangements that can bury a singer. Ella's voice is the blossom on this lyrical vine. There is something about this album that captivates. It is my favorite. Ella Fitzgerald's singing is not of this world and this album would make angel's sit the set out. Hyperbole? Perhaps, but I challenge you to find another suite of songs by any other singer that just melts time and has you saying, "I have to listen to this again...and again...and again. It is a piece of artistry where everything comes together and the magic of her voice and talent is inescapable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great title for this romantic collection, April 18, 2002
This review is from: Like Someone in Love (Audio CD)
I had beaen meaning to get this CD after reading the other reviews here and I finally did. I'm sorry I waited so long. The collection of love songs is perfect for late evening listening. It's all great but the 4 bonus tracks are some of the best too. With all the compilations and greatest hits of Ella available this CD could be easy to miss.....but don't. You will be happy you did just like me

5.0 out of 5 stars Memory, June 15, 2011
This review is from: Like Someone in Love (Audio CD)
I bought this album when it was released in the 1950's when I was a teen falling in and out of love. I played it over and over, loving every song and wishing I could sing like Ella.
No chance of that - she was such a superlative songstress. I carried that album with me throughout my twenties (the unforgettable 60's) and finally, in my thirties it was packed away
for one of the many moves made cross-country and was buried among boxes that one always manages to accumulate. Now in my seventies, I unearthed it (while cleaning out the basement)
and played it. What a wonderful feeling it was to listen to her voice singing those gorgeous songs again, despite the scratches the record had accumulated. This is a wonderful album
that I think epitomizes the greatness of this woman's talent. I have many of her other albums but this is the one that touches the heart.
