NPR has been streaming this for the past few days so I've been able to hear it while I wait for it to arrive. It's yet another excellent album from a great singer. I first caught her on the radio in 1990 when she sang with a band called "The Jody Grind", they did two albums then tragically lost two of their band members in a car accident. Hogan survived and went on to do 3 solo albums, the last was released in 2001. Since then she's been a backup singer for a number of huge acts, many of whom were kind enough to contribute songs for this album.

There are several tracks here that deserve to be huge hits, but my personal favourite is "Haunted".

In terms of style, she can sing anything and does. There's a country twang in her voice from time to time, but I've heard her sing torch songs, blues, jazz, rock, Gypsy (seriously - check out the first Jody Grind album "One Man's Trash Is Another Man's Treasure" for that gem.)

If you haven't heard of her, here's how you start:

The Jody Grind - One Man's Trash Is Another Man's Treasure
The Jody Grind - Lefty's Deciever
Kelly Hogan - The Whistle Only Dogs Can Hear
Kelly Hogan and the Pine Valley Cosmonauts - Beneath a Country Underdog
Kelly Hogan - Because It Feel Good

No one inhabits a song quite like Kelly Hogan, who is thankfully back after an 11 year recording hiatus. Her phrasing and enunciation is just perfect. Her taste in what artists to cover is superlative. Her back up band has 'chops' to spare. Her voice is better than ever. While her previous solo release and her previous release with the Pine Valley Cosmonauts follow the same template, the final product was a little scattershot. This one is is darn near perfect. Drop what you are doing and go buy this.

I remember Kelly Hogan when she sang with The Jody Grind back in the early 90s in Atlanta. The band had two albums on DB Records that are worth getting. Hadn't heard of her or thought about her until this album came across my radar recently. I was intrigued by the glowing reviews, so I took a chance and ordered it. WOW!!! This is without a doubt one of the year's best albums. Some great songs ... and that amazing voice of Kelly's. I won't be able to do her justice in comparing her to others, but she's in the vein of singers like Neko Case or Marti Jones (if any of you remember her!). I like the way that she mixes styles on this album, going from tunes with a country vibe, to others that have more of a jazz feel, or an Americana edge, or more towards pop --- yet with a twangy twist. And her voice wraps around each tune soulfully and seductively, pulling just the right nuance out of word. Hearing her sing a song as magical as "Ways of This World" just makes you want to shout out: "Sing it again!" It's that good. She's that good.

Here's a singer-type cliche that's really true in Kelly Hogan's case: she can sing a grocery list and make it sound great. Even better that she chooses good songs as well. Hogan has a beautiful voice, that's capable of expressing a quiet, aching tenderness, but also, she can deliver a strident declaration, and you'd believe her. The former lead singer for the Jody Grind only returns to her solo career occasionally, but this outing is well-crafted, and puts her voice front and center, if a little at the expense of any instrumental development. She's absorbed some of the flavor of great country vocalists such as Patsy Cline, but it's just one touch point out of many presented on this record. Kelly has not quite a made a country record, and she's not well-described as a jazz or "torch" singer, but she draws on those influences to help her interpret the work of several quite distinctive songwriters: Andrew Bird, Robyn Hitchcock, Vic Chestnut, Stephen Merritt, others.

I love that she sings with SOUL, but without the cheap America Idol-type Aretha imitations so common these days. She delivers in her own way. She sings with such an appealing tone, with fine subtlety, pitch play, and no histrionics. I would especially recommend this to a fan of female country singers, who are looking to hear a voice and sound that's kinda familiar, yet different. Booker T. Jones (of M.G.s, "Green Onions" fame) provides righteous, vintage Hammond organ sounds to many of the cuts.

Great offering from Kelly Hogan. Lots of genre shifts, but still feels true to the core idea of the album. Organ by Booker T. Get the record!!!
