Book Description

January 1, 1999
Like a Tree Planted is an environmental science fiction novel about Miranda, a teenager from future San Diego which is enclosed in a Dome because chemicals destroyed the natural world. The daughter of scientists, Miranda is Keeper of The Last Tree which is dying. She is also great-granddaughter of famous twentieth-century environmentalist Gabrielle Leigh who foresaw the trees' destruction. By means of The Archives, a futuristic multimedia library, Miranda studies Gabrielle's life. Each "visit" through The Portal becomes more real, and Miranda gradually materializes in twentieth-century Oregon to explore--with Gabrielle--the Pacific Northwest evergreen forests. As Miranda gets more involved in the past, she watches Gabrielle fall in love with a logger who gets caught in the battle between loggers and "greens." Back under the future Dome, Miranda's family and boyfriend try to keep her from being trapped in the past as local anti-nature opposition hunts them down. Miranda and Gabrielle struggle, between two places and times, to try and reintroduce trees to the future and lead people outside The Dome. For teens and adults.

From the Publisher

"Lonna is a good writer, and her words draw you into new worlds." Jeff Schwaner, GreatUnpublished.com. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Lonna Lisa Williams has traveled much in her life, from Asia to Canada to Great Britain, and most of the U. S., especially the western, northeastern, and southeastern states. Raised mostly in Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia, she settled in Southern California in 1976 and soon after had two children--Kristen and Ryan--with her first husband.

After finishing her M.A. in English at San Diego State University in 1988, she began teaching College English, got divorced, met and married her second husband, Edward, and began a second family which includes six-year-old Jessica and three-year-old Jonathan.

Lonna has published poems in literary magazines in America and England. She also has an essay included in a 1996 anthology about motherhood called Our Mothers, Ourselves. In 1996, Lonna was diagnosed with breast cancer and endured surgery and four months of chemotherapy. Now more than two years since she finished treatment, Lonna is well and is working on her true-life account of cancer in her book Walk through the Chemo Room. You can visit her Homepage. Lonna's story also appears on several Internet sites (find links to them on her Homepage).

Lonna and her family live in the California countryside, among fruit and eucalyptus trees. Alhough she has completed many other children's stories and novels for young adults, Like A Tree Planted is her first published novel, and its title, as much as anything, reveals her greatest source for inspiration besides her family and the environment.

"Like a Tree Planted" was very fascinating. It was suspensful, educational concerning the environment, and had a very interesting plot. Each character appeared real, and the scenery was vividly described.

I am not a science ficiton reader, but I found the novel to be very interesting. It manifested great art at storytelling. It was a delight to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my most exhilerating reading experiences., January 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Like a Tree Planted (Hardcover)
Reading "Like a Tree Planted" was one of the most exhilerating reading experiences I have ever encountered. "Like a Tree Planted" contains all of the supporting backbone characteristics an excellent novel needs. It has a thrilling, romantic futuristic plot that keeps one intensely interested.

The lead character Miranda shows a strong personality with a nature for exploring. She takes you into the future, present, and past.

"Like a Tree Planted" is a very descriptive book that takes the reader on the journies of Miranda. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone.
