This review is from: Like Water (Audio CD)
I discovered the depth of Anne Drummond's musical talents on two excellent recordings by pianist Kenny Barron - "Images" (2004) and "Cantra Brasil" (2002). On her first solo recording, she has managed to create some beautiful and passionate music that only deepens my appreciation and respect for her and her Art. Even my five-year old niece loves "Like Water". She started creating some new moves for her ballet class the first time I played this CD for her. I was touched by her reaction because she had never showed any interest in Jazz before.
Using a beautiful framework created by combining flute, piano and cello, this music excels on every level. Some of these listening experiences sent my mind straight to Brazil and rightfully so - Anne tapped into compositions created by Toninho Horta and Egberto Gismonti along with others from the Amazon Region, to explore a vein of musical richness that makes for some hearty listening. After my first listen, I found myself smiling from ear to ear. Her choice of musicians allows each artist to bring their own unique flavor to these excellent soundscapes. There are no weak moments here, but do be warned that this joyous listening experience ends way too soon. The disc clocks in at under forty minutes. However, the music is so good that this did not bother me after my second listen. As I watched my niece twirl and spin around to the grooves of "Afoxamba" and "Bossa For Copacabana", I asked her what was she thinking about while creating her dance. She smiled and said, "I am a dancing butterfly!" I will never let the pure joy of that magical moment escape my mind. Thanks Anne - well done! I am looking forward to your next recordings. Peace!!
