5.0 out of 5 stars One Of the BEST Ever, September 7, 2000
This review is from: Like Water for Chocolate (Audio CD)
okay. bottom line. if you're thinking about buying this cd - go for it. it rules. common's beats are awesome, and it about time we had a rapper rappin about somethin' real. i know common is not the only rapper out there with lyrics that make good sense (mos def, dead prez, talib kweli come to mind), but common's songs are something truly special. i know you're probably getting tired of "the light", but if you listen to that song carefully you can't tell me its not a true work of art. i could go on for hours about this masterpiece, but i will stop at this: this is the YEARS BEST cd. GO BUY IT.

oh and if you like it,check out "black on both sides" by mos def as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars BUY IT, September 13, 2000

This is definately a must-have...It's rap with meaning and if you like rap, but sometimes find swearing offfensive, this is for you. Common has smart lyrics and awesome beats. It's sort of a cross between A Tribe Called Quest and Timbaland and Magoo. This is mellow but upbeat at the same time.

This is my first Common cd and it bangs! I'm really into jazz and love any kind of music chalked full of positive messages and social consciousness. If you're looking for a hip-hop cd (this particular one edited) with a jazzy twist this one is for you! The tracks are fresh and Common delivers!

5.0 out of 5 stars traveling miles#7 Like Water for Chocolate - the keen rhymes of Common for their soul, love and respect -, May 2, 2009
This review is from: Like Water for Chocolate (Audio CD)
There is a small sticker on seald of record jacket saying "THE FIRST MUST-HAVE HIPHOP ALBUM OF 2000". And I think that beautiful and sad cover photo probably expressed the theme of segregation and there is note being written "1956 ALABAMA COUTESY OF Mr.GODON PARKS".But if the word of "chocolate" means black and their soul and the word of "water" means important thing to live, I think this title of "Like Water for Chocolate" means important thing for their soul,as it were the rhyme of Common Sence. The beautiful mother and cute children with white dress are drinking the water of their soul. Miles Davis released "doo-bop" on 1991 and he introduced rap music in the world,at the same year Common made his debut. After that he released "Can I Borrow A Dollar?" on 1993,and next year he released "Resurrection". On 1997 he released "One Day It'll All Make Sense" and he became famous. After three years of his getting fame of rapper,"Like Water for Chocolate" was released on 2000. This Album was produced by THE SOUL QUARIAN'S ,D'angelo,Questlove and James Poyser, you know. Well I was deeply impressed by "Time Traveln' ". And I think this track paid tribute to Fela is the theme of this album. First I can listen so nostalgic girls voice, and my mind and soul feel like traveling his roots. And Common says and sings "Tell a friend spaces and places you've been time travelin'." Roy Hargrove plays great trumpet and his back sound is fanky, jazzy and nostalgic,I can listen percussion with rap beat. And he sings " Comn Sense 92 and I'm still in this time travelin' turn the hand by what I learn and plan." This album has keen 16 tracks set with his life and soul. Let's go to the time travelin' with him! So he will tell and sing you spaces and places he has been by his legitimate rhyme. And today he is sure to keep on creating and writing his rhyme and rapping to give love, peace and honar to sisters, brothers, children and you.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the GREATEST slept on CDs EVER, July 1, 2006
This review is from: Like Water for Chocolate (Audio CD)
I liken "Like Water for Chocolate" to be one of the best CDs ever. All though "BE" is Common's best album, Like water for chocolate is not to be slept on. If you like real hip hop, at its finest I would suggest you buy this album ASAP. Believe me, you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Message understood, August 3, 2000

This is a hip hop album in its own category! The lyrics that Common spits are phnominal and have an in-depth message. I think that many other rappers in the industry can learn a line or two from him!
