Book Description

0226042154 978-0226042152 January 15, 1997
Before the Renaissance and Reformation, holy images were treated not as
"art" but as objects of veneration which possessed the tangible presence
of the Holy. In this magisterial book, Hans Belting traces the long
history of the sacral image and its changing role in European culture.
Likeness and Presence looks at the beliefs, superstitions, hopes,
and fears that come into play as people handle and respond to sacred
images, and presents a compelling interpretation of the place of the
image in Western history.

"A rarity within its genre—an art-historical analysis of iconography
which is itself iconoclastic. . . . One of the most intellectually
exciting and historically grounded interpretations of Christian
iconography." —Graham Howes, Times Literary Supplement

"Likeness and Presence offers the best source to survey the facts of
what European Christians put in their churches. . . . An impressively
detailed contextual analysis of medieval objects." —Robin Cormack,
New York Times Book Review

"I cannot begin to describe the richness or the imaginative grandeur of
Hans Belting's book. . . . It is a work that anyone interested in art,
or in the history of thought about art, should regard as urgent reading.
It is a tremendous achievement."—Arthur C. Danto, New Republic

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The icon, a representation of an early saint or religious personality, has a complex history. Belting, a professor of art history at the University of Munich who has authored several books on art history (e.g., Image & Its Public in the Middle Ages, Caratzas, 1989), focuses not on the art but the application and interpretation of the icon, offering a detailed examination of its use in early Christianity. The scholarship is excellent, but the book is not for the casual reader. The writing is complicated and difficult to follow, with an in-depth understanding of early Christian history assumed. The notes and appendix include pertinent quotes from medieval theologians. Recommended only for large academic libraries or special collections. 5.0 out of 5 stars Not really a review... more like a caveat., March 3, 2010
This review is from: Likeness and Presence: A History of the Image before the Era of Art (Paperback)
As an art historian, I have greatly enjoyed this book and have nothing but acclaim for both its content and its style. As a practicing Roman Catholic, though, I have found many passages to be very upsetting and hard to swallow. And if you are primarily interested in religion, and not in history of art, i.e. if you are not willing or able to read this with proper scholarly disengagement (and even more so if your knowledge of history doesn't allow you to form your own opinions), I wouldn't recommend that you ever read this work, admirable as it may be. From the Catholic point of view, this is a highly controversial book, presenting many thoughts and arguments that you should either be well-equipped to wrestle with, or better not expose yourself to.

Also, if you have more languages at your disposal, and are reading this for academic purposes, you may want to compare the text of this English edition to both the French translation and the German original. I have found that the three versions vary significantly in several important places.

Finally, if you are interested in the acheiropoieta, you should be warned that, though the book does dedicate lengthy passages to that specific group of images, it only mentions the Shroud of Turin once. And here's how:
'Only the Shroud of Turin, whose lost original was apparently already venerated in Byzantium as Christ's burial cloth, though it is the imprint of a dead man, comes close to this fictitious imprint of the living Christ.'
This, I believe, is the book's weakest point.

5.0 out of 5 stars Revolutionized Art History, February 13, 2009
This review is from: Likeness and Presence: A History of the Image before the Era of Art (Paperback)
One of the first art historians to take a look at art in its context and according to its function. It's a great read for those interested in art, culture and religion.

5.0 out of 5 stars a remarkable authorized work, May 22, 2007
This review is from: Likeness and Presence: A History of the Image before the Era of Art (Paperback)
I find this book of Hans Belting an authorized work and a remarkable profound study in its field. I think this book is very inspiring to understand what images make on us.

I am very grateful for your help. It was very easy to purchase through your service. Many many thanks
Pedro
