5.0 out of 5 stars Babysoul all grown up
The title of sax sensation Jackiem Joyner's upcoming release, Lil Man Soul, suggests that the relatively new saxophonist has "graduated" or matured from his early musical infancy to what he represents here on this latest effort. That couldn't be more correct, although, in my opinion, his growth began the moment he blew--no, caressed--the first note of his debut album,...

I purchased this CD with the Grooveology and they both did not impress me much. There just was not that umph to it. I did like this one better than the other one though.

The title of sax sensation Jackiem Joyner's upcoming release, Lil Man Soul, suggests that the relatively new saxophonist has "graduated" or matured from his early musical infancy to what he represents here on this latest effort. That couldn't be more correct, although, in my opinion, his growth began the moment he blew--no, caressed--the first note of his debut album, Babysoul. Here is an artist who is simply destined to be one of the finest in the business. The fact that the power horn duo, Richard Elliot and Rick Braun, heard and signed this young talent to their label practically as soon as he was visible--and the fact that fantastic and iconic keyboardist Keiko Matsui recruited this talent to tour with her as her chief saxman-- speak volumes about the capabilities of Joyner. This new release just adds further testimony to those capabilities. -- Ronald Jackson, [...]

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh!, May 6, 2009
This review is from: Lil' Man Soul (MP3 Download)
I am a huge fan of smooth jazz and buy almost all new sax releases. That being said, I have to admit that sometimes it sounds like artists have run out of ideas. Even though I still love that smooth sax sound, I will find myself skipping through songs. I have listened to Jackiem's new release several times now and have not skipped one song. It is no wonder he now has the #1 smooth jazz song with I'm Waiting For You. This whole CD has a very fresh, "organic" sound that the smooth jazz world has been waiting for!

4.0 out of 5 stars Current and enjoyable., July 23, 2009

The young and talented saxophonist shows a strong personality in his sophomore solo.
At times he hints at Grover Washington, Jr., and clearly he can play.
His backup group is good, but next time I'd like to hear some real instrumentation.
This is not as hard edged, it's actually much, much cooler, the majority being instrumental numbers that have a similar small funk flavor, Jackiem playing sax and a smidgen of flute.
The most interesting numbers is "Lost without you", "Wating For You" and "When The Time is Right" with sensual and meditative underpinnings.
Enjoy.
The album reached # 8 of the Billboard Top Contemporary Jazz Chart.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best, October 18, 2010
This review is from: Lil' Man Soul (MP3 Download)
Heard a lot of sax players in my time ,,but after hearing Mr. Joyner at KWJZ "music" festival this summer (Seattle), I knew I had to have his stuff! He is up there with the elite,,like Mr. Albright and Mr. Elliot for pure smooth groove and funky riffs. I especially like the ballads and that is not usually my preference(Lost without you and let me love you) . Don't be afraid to snatch up this download !

Love how Jackiem Joyner is daring to mix a hip R&B sound with Sax Jazz without a lot of vocals. The best change in music because this genre's music can tend to sound all alike from one artist to the next. Others need to sit down and think of some different sounds to mix with their wind and string instruments-- and make sure to purchase Joyner's "Jackiem Joyner" CD, you'll like it also!

This gentleman is amazing, I love jazz sax, it can be very hypnotic, sensual, erotic, etc.... This man is all of the above, he has more soul than his years............ I even went and bought one of his older CD's. He is amazing. I will buy any/every CD that he puts out, I dont even need to hear it first, his reputation preceeds him!

I bought this cd not knowing what to expect. I never buy music unless I hear at least two tracks so I went with this cd running blind. Well I tell ya JACKIEM DID HIS THANG!!! Not one bad song on the whole cd. Even got me to like Robin Thicke's "Lost Without You" and I hate Robin Thicke.
