Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

You don’t look at the metal-grilled, teardrop-tattooed Lil Wayne and think “honor-roll student.” But that’s just what he was before things went a lil crazy. His amateur rapping got him signed at age 10, he accidentally shot himself at age 12, he was a father at age 15, and he went solo at age 17. Occasionally, this biography falls into a lull of listing Wayne’s accomplishments: he released this album, it sold this many, and so on. Wayne’s infamous scrapes with the law (illegal drugs and weapons) are soft-peddled but at least are given due mention. Still, the portrait that emerges is fascinating: a talented kid from New Orleans with a drug-dealer dad who got his big break by freestyling rhymes on the voice mail of a famous rapper. No doubt the Superstars of Hip-Hop series will be mad popular. Grades 5-8. --Daniel Kraus
