Book Description

January 1, 1989
The Lilac Bush is not another story of a Holocaust survivor. It consists of delicately told stories of a young woman who arrives in New York in 1947 after surviving Auschwitz, only to find out that post-war America is trying to forget the war and is not interested in her past. The author overcomes the ordeal and builds a new life, setting an example of the indestructability of the human spirit.

This review is from: The Lilac Bush: Second Printing (Hardcover)
As a child of a holocaust survivor, I found this book riveting. Without being too graphic which makes many holocaust books difficult to read, this story is about the loss of family and the ability to survive. It is well written yet simple and from the heart, and I felt that the author was speaking to me telling her story of how she survived the war and how she remained emotionally connected to her family and her religious beliefs. While my parents rarely spoke about their childhood or war experiences, I felt this story could have been theirs and I so appreciated learning more and empathizing with the author. I only have praise and appreciation for Judith Novack for relating her story to us in a most meaningful way.
