Helen Merrill at 73 still has what it takes- a sensitive, powerful album from one of the few jazz vocal masters we have left. Especially touching is the final track, a duet with her son.

It is easy to argument that this recording, being a bit uniform in its conception, deserves no more than four stars. But that would wrong not only the quality of this recording but particularly the brilliant career as a whole of Helen Merrill who is on this recording still singing, over seventy years of age, in a fascinating and emotional way. So, to be not too finicky, I value 'Lilac Wine' with conviction with five stars as a homage to Helen.
