Kindergarten-Grade 3-Make room on the beginning-reader shelves for this delightful story imported from Switzerland. After convincing her father to visit an exhibit of life-sized mechanical dinosaurs at the Museum of Natural History, Lila discovers a rainbow-striped baby dino near one of the display models. They bond immediately, and the cute little fellow follows her out the door; she tucks him under her jacket and takes him home. Lila soon learns that only children can see him, though adults can smell and hear him. That night she broaches the subject of a pet-maybe a baby dino-with her parents. After pleasant dreams, she awakens to find that her friend is gone and decides that maybe he was only imaginary after all. But on her way to school, she is delighted to see him sitting in the back of the car, munching on her mother's fern that had disappeared from the bathroom. de Wolf's watercolor cartoons clarify the action for young listeners and broaden the humor. Pair this gem with James Mayhew's Katie and the Dinosaurs (Bantam, 1992) for a guaranteed read-aloud hit.

Gr. 2-4. A seven-and-a-half-year-old who loves dinosaurs more than anything is thrilled when she encounters a little dinosaur hiding out at a special exhibit put on by the National History Museum. It's not your typical dinosaur. Covered from head to toe with rainbow stripes, this compact dino, about the size of a dog, is a sight to behold--but only a sight for children's eyes. Lila takes her dinosaur home, and the usual antics ensue when a guest that parents can't see has to be accommodated. This predictable tale gets a shot in the arm from the spirited color illustrations on each page that should keep readers turning eagerly.
