4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Lili Marlene, January 21, 2004
This review is from: Lili Marlene Best of Marlene Dietrich (Audio CD)
Marlene Dietrich like Humphrey Bogart and John Wayne is simply immortal. She is so good it's scary. Just listen to her singing " Falling in Love Again" and you are in that smoky, dim Berlin nightclub listening in hushed silence, completely mesmerized by her voice, beauty and charm. A staunch anti- Nazi in World War 2, she even rode with General Patton during the war at the front and helped to organise medical aid for the wounded. Her evocative signature song, "Lili Marlene" was a hit with Allied soldiers, GIs and also the Wehrmacht. Based on a poem written by a German soldier in 1915, Marlene wrote one verse to boost the troop's morale and endear herself even more to them. Listen carefully... it's the one about the pack on your back. To this day the brave and daring men of the SAS (Special Air Service) sing Lili Marlene as their regimental march. Another song I like in this album is "Kisses sweeter than wine". Some kisses really are sweeter than the finest wine. As the Travelling Gourmet, I have tasted some of the best wines in the world so I know. Listen to all the marvellous songs with a glass of Philippe Gonet Champagne in one hand and a Monte Cristo cigar in the other. A lovely voluptuous blonde close beside you would be most appropriate too. Das Leben es ist unbestimmt, isst erst den Nachtisch. Enjoy! 4.0 out of 5 stars "The Best of Marlene Dietrich", December 28, 2005

This review is from: Lili Marlene Best of Marlene Dietrich (Audio CD)
A fine little c.d., missing only "La Vie en Rose." Songs here range from 1940 to 1963, with several fine but offbeat songs from later in the Great Dietrich's career ("If He Hang by the String" and "Such Trying Times").

Dietrich was a fabulous, mysterious, and sometimes humorous song stylist. Only Peggy Lee approaches her sultry voice. Let's hope that DreamWorks soon produces the optioned film about Miss Dietrich's life so a new generation can discover her. She was the original Madonna. In fact, her daughter, Maria Riva, in her biography of Dietrich reports that Madonna contacted Dietrich in the late 80's hoping to portray Dietrich in a film project. Dietrich dismissed the call, commenting to daughter, "I often portrayed whores in my films, but this Madonna IS a whore!" How did she know?
