"Hands, arms, shoulders are potent instruments of expression and action," says Lilias Folan. "It is through them that we reach out and participate in life." Strengthening the upper body not only helps you function better in daily life, it also supports your yoga postures. Strong abdominals are also essential for progress in yoga and for strengthening your back. Most of this 35-minute video is devoted to upper-body strengtheners such as the downward dog and flying angel poses, which strengthen the arms, hands, and shoulders as they support a portion of your body weight. Instructor Folan, known as Lilias on television, is warm, welcoming, and clear. She teaches each move simply, at its easiest level first, giving options for increasing intensity. Rather than switching quickly, she stays in one posture for a while, explaining and refining it. Her explanations are clear and vivid, such as, "Your shoulders are not munching on your ear lobes." Only four minutes are devoted to two abdominal exercises, each taught in three progressive stages. This video is aimed at beginners, and all postures are accessible, whatever your fitness level or age. --Joan Price

It's been a couple decades since I had seen a Lilias yoga program(I used to watch her yoga classes on television). It was like visiting an old friend. I now remember what made her program so easy to follow. Her approach is very inviting; she is not pretentious or condescending. She offers a program that is fairly easy, but my only complaint is that it is short. She could have provided a few more postures, especially for the abs. It's a nice supplementary tape to own, but for serious yoga enthusiasts, it's probably too brief and simple. Lilias Folan's strength is describing the postures so that you can follow her instructions without having to stop and watch her as you do it. I look forward to trying her other tapes.

As an Ashtanga yoga teacher, I'm always reviewing the work and words of other teachers. Lilias is genuine and easy to follow. Her postures (asanas) are different from what the Ashtanga Primary Series uses and as a result an ashtanga student can learn additional ways to strengthen their practice. Also, for those who are new to yoga or who aren't very strong, this is a great place to start learning basic abs and arm movements. It looks super easy, but trust me, it is still work! This is a great addition to anyone's yoga library if for no other reason than the fresh approach to the basics.
