Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-When a group of BIG robots with BAD attitudes destroys his playground, Lilliput 5357 jumps into his rocket racer and begins his quest for a safe place to play. Each place he stops is not quite right, being TOO NOISY! TOO STINKY! or TOO SPOOKY! Finally, just as he is about to give up all hope, a pair of friendly ASTRO GUYS arrive in a flying saucer to save the day. They beam the forlorn yellow robot to a distant planet of friendly ROBOTEERS, where he has A LOT of fun! The brightly colored, imaginative photographic collages featuring a retro collection of the wind-up tin toys, along with strategically placed geometric shapes and appropriate sound effects, provide a lot to look at. Although the story is a bit awkward, the clever combination of old-fashioned charm and futuristic zing in the illustrations gives this title a curious appeal. Future fans of Ray Bradbury or the Star Wars saga will enjoy the eclectic sound effects, like Bippity Zippity Beep Beep Beep, and will identify with Lilliput 5357 as he flies away on his adventure. Most young readers, however, might prefer a more humorous story about robots, such as Bob Staake's Hello, Robots (Viking, 2004).-Linda L. Walkins, Mount Saint Joseph Academy, Brighton, MA

This book and the robot I bought with it made me into a hero. My daughter said they were on their 9th reading of the book. If you buy the book get the robot that goes with it. By accident I sent the robot first and followed with the book 2 days later. I would recommend you do the same. It worked great. He had the thrill of getting something in the mail twice and he was ready for the book after playing with the robot for a couple of days.

I kept ignoring this book on amazon until I took a sneak peak inside. I bought it for my five year old son who is robot crazy and has a small collection of Schylling windup robots. This book is a cute story with fantastic pictures using Schylling's Lilliput 5357 and other tin toys. Great for children and tin toy collectors alike. Highly recommended!

I highly recommend Lilliput 5357, for little kids, and old farts who collect cool tin robots !
The story is suitable for preschoolers, while the photos are incredible !
Children will love the imaginative and colorful photo illustrations capturing Lilliput's adventures while looking for a place to play.
Along the way, he meets robots and tin toys of every description.
I've never seen clearer photos of some of these robots, they are the best I've seen.
Collectors of tin toys will love this book too !

Lilliput 5357 liked playing with his robot friends, but one day when a group of big and bad robots showed up and started destroying Lilliput's friends, he knew he had to find a new place to play. Jumping into his Rocket Racer, he looked and looked, until he finally found the perfect place.

OK, don't take the above description too seriously; this book has a real surrealistic feel to it. All of the characters are those old 1940s(?) wind-up tin robots, and the storyline is quite goofy. What makes this book click is the wonderful sound words that the reader can have fun with ("Ker-pow!" "Vroom!" "Bippity zippity beep beep beep!"), and the many pictures of those fun toy robots.

Yeah, my six-year-old and I had fun with this book, and we think you and your little reader will too!
