Very good down-tempo electronica,
By A Customer
This review is from: L'illustration Musicale (Audio CD)
This CD was recently reviewed on NPR, and it offers a nice mix of mellow electronica. Most cuts don't have vocals. Two that do are marvelous, featuring intertwining lyrics and melodies. The music weaves pure electronic beats with piano in some places, synth organ in others, and slow melodic tempos. The sounds just float through the air. Great CD to chill out to, and the music seems to have staying power --I've played over and over and over and haven't grown tired of it yet.I recommend this CD if you're looking for some thoughtful, sensitive music to live, work or drive by.

King Of Woolworths - L'Illustration Musicale,
This review is from: L'illustration Musicale (Audio CD)
King of Woolworths doesn't abandon his lovely cinematic soundscapes, but instead, on his second album L'ILLUSTRATION MUSICALE, adds an unexpected element: pop music. Dot Allison lends her considerable vocals to "Sell Me Back My Soul," and Emma Pollack to the Brit-pop gleam of "Nuada." Perhaps it's the association with then-labelmates Saint Etienne, but it's a welcome addition, especially since he no longer has to rely so heavily on movie samples. Immediately, "G-Plan" gets us off to a bongo-fueled noir, and "Montparnasse" takes a detour into a dark land where balalaikas reign. "Hub 100" is all density and harp strings, while "123 (Brillo's Beat)" is so Gary Glitter that it's scary. "A12" opts for simplicity; it's a piano tune with a melody that goes in unexpected places. But the standout track here is "Evelsong," a dreamy confection with contrasting male and female lyrics that send it straight into the stratosphere. Absolutely gorgeous. The closing track, "This is Radio Theydon," is a close contender, though, with its careful but emotive melody. A rousing illustration of how music should be.

I'm glad I discovered these folks, they have some good music. My absolute fav. is "Nuada". I would buy this entire album just for this song. Check it out!!
