Comment: This book has already been loved by someone else. It MIGHT have some wear and tear on the edges, have some markings in it, or be an ex-library book. Over-all it is still a good book at a great price! (if it is supposed to contain a CD or access code, that may be missing)

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Ten-year-old Lilly has always joined her scientist parents on their expeditions, but their voyage to the Shipwreck Islands will be so dangerous that they send her to stay with Great-Uncle Ernest instead. In his seaside town, everyone seems to have a secret (and possibly pirate past). Even the library’s one book on the Shipwreck Islands has its own secret (and probably) a treasure map. When Lilly learns that her parents’ ship has sunk, she takes to the seas on a rescue mission. Lilly, who keeps lists to hold her fears at bay, battles her timid nature throughout the book and finds her courage when she needs it most. Whether puzzling out who’s who and what’s what or just enjoying Lilly’s exciting exploits, many children will relate to this rather cozy adventure story and its lovably flawed heroine. Like the story, Shepperson’s many full-page illustrations are lively, engaging, and occasionally humorous. Grades 3-6. --Carolyn Phelan

I am an eight year old girl and I love to read. Dad brings home lots of books for me and I read them all. Lilly is the best adventure book I have ever read. I can hardly wait for the next book by this author.

"Lilly and the Pirates" by Phyllis Root, illustrated by Rob Shepperson, Boyds Mills Press, 2010, 116 pages, $16.95 hardcover
Read aloud: age 7 and older.
Read yourself: age 8 - 9 and older.

Lilly worries about everything, and records all of her worries in her worry book. Her globe-trotting scientist parents don't worry about anything at all.
Lilly has always gone with her parents wherever their expeditions take them. While her parents are in the field, Lilly reads about her favorite heroine, Millicent Murry, who is brave and fearless. Lilly often wonders if she will ever be as brave as Millicent - a thought that actually worries her.
When word arrives that her parents are to go to the Shipwreck Islands in search of the rare frangipani fruit fly, Lilly can't begin to think of traveling across so much water. Instead, she goes to stay with Great-Uncle Ernest who is nice but a bit of a bore. As it turns out, life with Great-Uncle Ernest quickly becomes anything but boring. Pirates are in town, there's talk of buried treasure, and her parents' note (sent by sea gull) that their boat is sinking sends Lilly on her own expedition - to save her parents, just like Millicent Murray would do!
Master storyteller Phyllis Root has written another great adventure that's certain to keep kids on the edge of their seats.

We got this from the library and I started to read it when husband drove.
I really enjoyed reading it and he and all my children loved to listen, they range from Preschool to Third grade.
It's engaging, the chapters are short, illustrations tie in nicely with the chapters, the characters are likeable and develop well, kids can keep track easily of the story and there's laughs to share.

Wonderful book, you will enjoy it too!

Someone gave us a copy of this book as a gift. We loved it so much we're purchased three copies(so far!) as gifts. What a great story! It has just enough suspense, it's exciting without being scary and has an unexpected twist or two. Bravo!
