Love, Romance, and Adventure...,
By Maria D. (St. Charles, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lily: A Love Story (Hardcover)
I think that this book is one of the best romances that I've ever read. I have also been charmed by the character Marion Beatty. He's 6'0 and I love guys at that height! Well, as far as Texas goes, this is pretty much in short of what it really was like back then. It felt as if I were right there with them. I imagined that I was Lily all the time and when they stopped in that one barn that was owned by someone off on Christmas vacation, and made love with each other. I was scared when Lily was, loving when she was, but angry at her when she got mad at Marion for little things. I felt so sorry for him at those times. if ever someone wants a comedic, romantic, and a little saddening tale about after the Civil War, this is the perfect one.

This is not a formula romance. It is deeper, better written, and more realistic than most so-called romance books. I absolutely loved this book and recommend it highly. It is written in the first person, and with such charm and honesty, I immediately cared deeply for the characters. I hope this auther writes more novels. She is an extremely gifted story-teller!

This book was very good. Out of all the books that I have read, this book is my favorite. It has adventure, drama, romance, action and suspense. My one friend recommended it to me, and now I'm recommending it to all of you surfers. This book will make you laugh and cry as you see Lily go through good and rough times.

Lily is a wonderful and touching love story. I found myself immersed within the story. Cindy Bonner goes into great detail how life really was back in the days of stage-coach robberies and shoot-outs. I could not put it down. The story is told from Lily's point of view which really makes the reader see everything through Lily's eyes, going through everything she goes through. I greatly recommend this novel for anyone who likes love stories with high adventure in historical times. I love this story!

While I agree with the previous statements regarding Bonner's "Lily: A Love Story," I can't help but want to point out that I didn't always like Lily. But similar to Marion Beatty, Lily DeLony becomes likeable through growth and change. Yes Lily was intelligent. Yes she was strong willed and yes she was a hard worker. But Lily was also a child, falling in love for the first time. And her actions at times frustrated me, where on the one hand she appeared to be independent and then suddenly dependent on Marion almost too much. She contradicted herself more times than Marion lied. But there in lies the beauty to Bonner's writing. She successfully made this reader feel for the characters and care for them, as well as identify with Lily's guilt over familial duty and wish for a life away from her existing one. Bonner's historical research into the history of McDade and the Beatty's is also a nice touch and lent a realism that was not exaggerated. A very entertaining read.

This book is based on the hangings that happened in 1883 in McDADE Texas. Marion Beatty was a real person. And this is book is based on my family. I did alot og family researching and people told me about this book that it was based on my family. Well I really don't know if it is true that this book is based on them, because I haven't read it. But like I said Marion Beaty was was an in-law of my great great great grandfather.

I first read this book when I was in sixth or seventh grade. At first I was surprised to find it in my middle school library, but I fell in love with it. This was the first romance novel I ever read and remember it with a lot of love even though it was seven or eight years ago when I first read it. When I finished reading it I told my friends about it and most of them ended up reading it and also loving it.
