Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8–10—An exciting, stand-alone sequel to Lily Dale: Awakening (Walker, 2007). Calla Delaney, 17, has moved from Tampa, FL, to Lily Dale, a small town in western New York, to live with her grandmother, a registered medium. Calla finds that she, too, has the gift of seeing and hearing spirits. Indeed, a spirit visited her at her mother's funeral a few months earlier and alerted her to the fact that the death was not accidental. Calla must find out more about her mother's past, which includes a spurned boyfriend from Lily Dale High School. Now, a serial killer is attacking blond teenage girls. Through her visions, Calla knows the location of the body of the first one murdered. She also sees where the latest victim has been dumped, while still alive. Little does she realize that her name is next on the list. Even while these terrible incidents are happening, Calla must adjust to her surroundings, make friends, and begin a new school as a senior. She confides in Jacy, and he reaches out to help her handle her fears and suspicions. Her former boyfriend seems interested in renewing their relationship. And then there is the hot guy Blue, who makes Calla's head spin. This installment leaves unanswered questions that beg for resolution in yet another "Lily Dale" novel.—Lillian Hecker, Town of Pelham Public Library, NY

She writes some great suspense stories.

What I like most about Calla is her willingness to learn about her newfound abilities, something that's much changed from her behavior in book one.

The second installment of Wendy Corsi Staub's Lily Dale series begins where AWAKENING left off-with Calla beginning to understand, and utilize, her psychic abilities. After leading authorities to the body of a missing girl, Kaitlyn, in book one, Calla finds herself the target of Kaitlyn's killer, who has perpetrated a string of abductions. Add to this suspenseful tale a bit more of the backstory concerning Calla's mother's mysterious death and a dose romantic intrigue, and Staub delivers a top-notch YA novel with the perfect set-up for book three. Highly reccommended!

Rating: 4 Enchantments

Ms. Staub does an excellent job melding paranormal and suspense together in her LILY DALE series featuring Calla Delaney.

Picking up mere moments after the first book left off, LILY DALE: BELIEVING has Calla finding herself the target of a serial killer targeting teenage girls, a case that first came to light in book one. However, reading "Awakening" is not required to enjoy LILY DALE: BELIEVING for it stands quite well on its own. Calla is still trying to deal with the unexpected loss of her mother, the realization of her own medium abilities and adjusting to life in Lily Dale with her unique grandmother Odel and the physical distance between her and her father. Add in the normal teenager issues and things can get pretty complicated. What I like most about Calla is her willingness to learn about her newfound abilities, something that's much changed from her behavior in book one. The fact that we see things from both the killer's point of view several times during the story adds a creepiness to the book that keeps the reader rapidly turning the pages, knowing that at some point there will be a meeting between he and Calla.

Threads left unsolved from the first book continue on in book two, and with BELIEVING's own startling ending it will no doubt leave readers waiting anxiously for book three releasing November 2008.

Lily Dale: Believing (Lily Dale)
This was a good story. It also is about a place that really exists in New York where the residents are clairvoyants, mediums and the like. You can actually visit. I chose this book because I enjoy this author so much.
She writes some great suspense stories. If you like Mary Higgins Clark, you will like Wendi Corsi Staub.

This is a book that is hard to put down at night so sometimes I dont get enough sleep. The characters are likable and the setting is like somewhere I would have loved to have grown up in. If your 15 or 60 I think you will like the Lily Dale series. I did.

That is what a good book does for the reader. this Lily Dale series delivers all the suspense and keeps the reader hooked and you never quite figure it all out! Just the way I like it, too many writers seem to plot out the book as they write it and somehow you feel duped. Wendy Straub knows where this plot is going and the complete series answers all at the very end! Great reading.

I love this book, as I did the first. Always a skeptic, I now have a new found respect for Lily Dale and can't wait to visit. My mind is open and eager!

Believing is the second book in the Lily Dale series. Book one, or Awakening, mostly set the story up. Calla is a young girl about to start her senior year of high school when her mother dies. Soon after, she goes to visit her grandmother, who she doesn't know very well, in Lily Dale. Lily Dale is a small town near Buffalo, NY that is mostly populated by spiritualist mediums. And when she finds out that her grandmother, Odelia, is also a medium, she is initially skeptical. Until she starts having visions of her own.

I liked this book a little more than the first. That one was mostly introducing characters and settings. There's a little more storyline here. We learn more about the ghosts appearing to Calla and why they want her attention.
This definitely isn't an action-adventure series. The only 'fight' scene is one where somebody knocks another out with little more than a punch. Young adult paranormal mystery (with a touch of romance) pretty much covers the genres of this book well.Personally, I'd like it much better if the fight scenes were fleshed out. That might add some suspense that's lacking in this series so far.
