Fans of Christopher Plummer will not want to miss this movie, as he has a dual role: the rather arrogant and ascerbic Fitzroy Winn and his "alter-ego", Roberto Terranova. Fitz, an actor and Lily, a playwright have a long and now troubled marriage. Fitz's dream is to make it really big in a film and when he finds a new script that Lily has written, he sees his chance. However, Lily is having none of it! She wants a different actor for the part. So Fitz, unbeknownst to Lily, becomes Roberto Terranova and gets the role. But what will happen to their marriage when it turns out that Lily is very attracted to Roberto?!
This is a little bit of a departure for Christopher Plummer, but a very enjoyable one, as he gets to try some comedy. And, as always, he is excellent! Maggie Smith is terrific as the tired and underappreciated Lily. I would recommend this for more mature audiences, only because the characters are older, although I first saw it in my 20's and loved it! A great little comedy to brighten an evening!

I saw the original movie "Lily in Love" and thought it was wonderful.
So I bought the "on demand" DVD version of "Lily in Love" when I saw it on Amazon hoping to enjoy the movie again. I was quite dissatisfied and returned the item.
The reasons were:

1. Several scenes were too dark to see well
2. It was hard to hear in some places
3. The speed of some frames either temporarily halted or sped up.
4. It didn't have all the scenes of the movie (it was like it was an "edited for content" TV version).
5. The DVD cover sleeve also had grammer errors which led me to believe it was a "home created" movie.

I still love the original full-length movie. Sadly, this product was not it.

I had never seen this movie before, but I am a big fan of both Christopher Plummer and Maggie Smith, and I thought, "How could I go wrong with this purchase?"
The plot is not very deep on any level, but the performances are what you would expect from these two wonderful actors. My problem is with the poor transfer to DVD; it looks like it was transferred from video tape. The images are soft, the color is dark and muted, the audio is not crisp and the dialogue can be difficult to understand at times. The movie is also present in 4:3 format, which is probably a give-away that it was transferred from a video source, rather than the original film.
I would give the movie higher marks if the presentation were better. The movie is fine, but the DVD is disappointing.

This is one of my favorite Maggie Smith movies. She plays a writer (Lilly)married to a famous stage actor (Christifer Plummer) who covets her new film role that she doesn't want him to act in so he tricks her into believing he is a blonde Italian and not only gets the role but swoops her off her feet, or does he, does she really know what he is up to and is playing along; you decide.

Some of the scenes work well and the byplay between Smith & Plummer is always delicious. Other scenes are lame and the movie bogs down during the "making of the movie" portion. The plot hangs on whether make-up can keep a woman from recognizing her husband of more than a decade. I go along with this farce and enjoy Plummer's marmalade of a "Northern Italian." I re-watch it from time to time for the half dozen scenes that work and the always terrific performances.

After what seemed like one of the longest intros to the plot sequences I can remember this movie turns into the making of a movie. In movie being made in the movie; the director falls asleep during filming. Perhaps this is a case of art imitating life, except that this movie lacks art.

Does she love him or him, except that he is him. So it is a two sided love triangle with Christopher Plummer playing a standard overbearing drama queen off stage and a brilliant performer on stage actor. Upon learning that his wife, the Lily of the title , played by Maggie Smith has written a movie perfect for him, except that the movie character is younger, European and courtly, none of the things that describe Christopher Plummer's character Fitz Wym.

And so Fitz using rubber faces and false teeth and a blonde wig becomes Italian (Northern Italian, you know where they have blonde Italians - Funny or maybe not) Roberto Terranova and quickly proves he, Fitz can play this part as long as he is Roberto and along the way Fitz, as Roberto notices that his wife, not his wife Lily is also looking for a far from home romance. Exactly how one can be romantic or even kiss with a rubber face is the least of this movie's unhelpful mysteries.

To be fair there is a plot buried in the crawling sludge like timing of this movie. May of the scenes shot in Hungary are quite lovely. But mostly this is a 30 minute plot, stretched out too long. There is some discussion that this is not the original theatrical release and that good parts have been edited out. If so what has been kept drags for too long. There are a few twists and the one at the end could have saved this movie had it been about 1/3 shorter.
