Editorial Reviews

Like truth, beauty resides in simplicity. When it manifests itself, it doesn't require elaborate arguments or proofs; you can't debate someone into apprehending it. It's apparent and all it requires is appreciation, or perhaps even love. Such are the songs of Lily & Madeleine. Understandably, when their debut EP, The Weight of the Globe, came out in early 2013, much was made of the fact that Lily and Madeleine Jurkiewicz are teenagers: Madeleine is eighteen and her sister is sixteen. Surely, that's important given the impressive talent on display.

The long awaited debut by Lily & Madeleine starts off very pleasantly.
Songs like "Devil we know" or "Spirited away" tell us straight-away what L&M are about:
Beautiful close-harmony vocals and quality-songwriting to make dozens of self-acclaimed "Singer-Songwriters" feel ashamed or envious.
But that is only the beginning.

Once you know what this record is about, L&M will take you on a mesmerizing journey...
Comes track number 5 "Disappearing heart" -followed by the likes of "Paradise", "And tonight", "You got out",
"Lost upon the sea", "Come to me" and hidden track "Token"etc...- things start to become really mind-blowing.

The second-half of this beautiful debut sounds like a "Best of"-collection of some well-respected, classic group
calling us from the golden age of music (Let's just say: The 60s).

The overall production sound is warm, dynamic, breezy and sparse in the best way.
Allowing the songs and the voices to shine. And how they shine...
You can't tell how it works on you, but the soft, airy and gentle sound of their voices (plus some little twists of "Twang" at all the right places)
will get you addicted. You will listen again and again and again again....

The sisters are gifted with a very natural and flowing songwriting-style.
Combined with their perfect pitch and phrasing they will leave you stunned.
The atmosphere of the whole album is best described as romantic: Reflections of all human affections like
love, loss, fear, hope, desire, regret, joy.

Yes, teenagers they are but this ain't what I would call typically teenage-pop. It ain't A.O.R. either.
It's the music of two young women who obviously do nothing else but concentrating on what matters to THEM.

From the review titled "Mousy, Prudish, Teengirls.." in regard to play on NPR: < It is so out of place that one can’t help but to suspect unethical interests were somehow at play.> Not true, and that goes for the rest of the many negative assumptions in this massive, feverish review. No bags of money involved, no payola, etc. For clues as to what may have motivated this epic, check out the writer's other Amazon reviews, though the words "Mousey, Prudish Teengirls" may reveal as much as you'd want to know.

I was driving around today listening to the Bob Edward's show on SiriusXM Radio. He had an extended interview with Lily and Madeleine. They were a pleasure to listen to and I loved their music. I purchased the album today and I am glad that I did. They are an excellent up and coming duo.

I would classify the album as very mellow. I am not an experienced music critic, but you can hear folk and rock influences in their songs. To my ear they have great harmonies. The voices remind me as a cross between Alison Krauss and Sheryl Crow. It is a great first album and I wish them the best of luck with future career.

Lily & Madeleine have such beautiful harmonies. Devil We Know is great. This is a very well done album, especially from such a young duo. I am looking forward to seeing this duo mature musically.

I found Lily and Madeleine via a video link and immediately was caught in their spell. Haunting and effortless harmonies and clear voices without being too angelic, I can't wait to hear what the future holds for them and look forward to their next collection. aB

Beautiful harmonies. Heartfelt lyrics. Spare, pleasing arrangements and melodies. A hint of innocence. Honesty. Clarity. Youthful passion and wonder. Like many, I first saw them on you tube videos and the web. Happy to see them released to a wider audience here. Certainly worth your time.

Even though sisters Lily and Madeleine Jurkiewicz are natives of Indianapolis, the wistful and contemplative songs on their self-titled debut album exude a vibe that's more rural than urban, a down-to-earthiness rather than a self-conscious indie-hipster attitude (though the stylish album cover suggests otherwise). Lily & Madeleine's tight, beguiling, Appalachian-style harmonies -- and evocative lyrical lines like "And the porch swing keeps swinging on / Long after your body's gone" -- bring to mind grain fields swaying gently in the breeze, trickling creeks, and the scent of fresh mountain air.

Various instruments are introduced throughout the album -- acoustic guitar, piano, violin, slide guitar, a string section, pedal steel, tambourine, snare drum -- but the songs are all so sparsely and tastefully arranged that each and every composition sounds like a masterclass in subtle yet lush and richly atmospheric songwriting.
