Editorial Reviews

Review

"Anyone with a daughter should have this book. The Soccer Sisters' team code is really a
code for life. My favorite was beating the boys at recess. Way to go Lily, as my daughter
would say, you rock!"
-- Ray Leone, Women's Head Soccer Coach, Harvard University

"As a mom of two daughters I'm always looking for books about strong girls and sports and
all the good things that can trickle down from being part of a team. This one hit the mark on
all those levels. Highly recommend."
-- Jenny Rosenstrach, Dinner A Love Story

"The Soccer Sisters series isn't just about soccer.  It's about friendships, family, and the awesome thrill that comes from winning. It's also fun, which is the best reason in the world to read it."
-- Carl Hiaasen

Any kid who has a mild interest in soccer (or any sport for that matter) will love this book. I gave it to my 10 yo when we went on a road trip and I didn't hear from her until we got to our destination. She just ate it up. As a mom of two daughters I'm always looking for books about strong girls and sports and all the good things that can trickle down from being part of a team. This one hit the mark on all those levls. Highly recommend.

While I play lacrosse more than soccer, I really enjoyed reading about the Soccer Sisters' detailed action on the field. I really liked the way this book makes any athlete, of any team sport connect to the lessons learned by Lily-especially on the soccer field! This book discusses how to stand up and think for yourself, especially dealing with pier pressure. I also really enjoyed reading about the power of friendship both on and off the field.

This book really hits the nail on the head in terms of being an all around great book for young girls (and boys too, honestly!). It deals with not only soccer, but friendship, family, facing defeat and failure, but what stuck with me the most was that it dealt with facing peer pressure and the pressure to change who you are to meet the needs of others... but the best part of this issue is that Montalbano perfectly and so authentically gives her leading character the strength to overcome this issue, therefore setting a great model for young readers who face this same dilemma... and often.
Five big, shiny stars for this read - I will certainly be recommending it to all of the young children, parents, soccer players, etc. in my life!

I bought this book for my 11-year-old daughter on a Wednesday, and despite being in camp from 9am-3pm daily, she devoured it in two sittings and is already asking for the next installment. In her own words, she said "I love all of the adventures that Lily takes, through soccer and in her life. This really makes it an exciting book."

Lily James lives and breathes soccer. She and her teammates, her soccer sisters, have drawn up a code of conduct with 10 rules to live by. But when a new girl, Colby, subs on the team in a couple of tournaments, she leaves Lily questioning some of those rules.

In Colby's mind, anything is acceptable in a game if it helps you to win. And breaking rules off the field is acceptable if you have fun doing it. Lily has to decide whether to stick to the code or go along with Colby's rules.

Lily Out of Bounds, the first in a new Soccer Sisters series by Andrea Montalbano, does more than look at the game of soccer and how it's played, though there's plenty of soccer play in the book. It also looks at how teens and pre-teens handle the challenges of facing peers who push them in directions they are not sure they want to go.

Lily is confused about Colby's actions. They help the team to win on the field, and off the field they are a lot of fun. But going along means she has to lie to people she cares about and play in a way that doesn't feel right to her. Once she begins to see that Colby's actions do have consequences, she's more able to determine for herself what's right and wrong.

Soccer Sisters, with Lily Out of Bounds as the first book, is a promising new series for girls aged 9 to 13.

The author provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Lily Out of Bounds was the May pick for my son's book club (sixth graders) and we had arranged a Skype session with the author through In This Together Media, the publisher. So - the review below is as much about how much the kids enjoyed the book as well how much they gained from talking to author Andrea Montalbano.
The kids really enjoyed Soccer Sisters's look at the life of a soccer obsessed middle schooler. The soccer players in particular were facinated with a world in which players traveled to another country (OK Canada)for a tournament, endured injuries and developed strategies against their longtime rivals. The non-soccer players were equally enthralled with the life lessons about gamesmanship, fair play and choosing friends wisely.
The author's background as a competitive player is facinating. The kids learned so much from her talking about juggling being on three teams at the same time, struggling to do her homework with practice everyday and still managing to "take care of business" - getting good enough grades to get into Harvard and Columbia. She also gave them some great pointers on writing and on unlocking their imagination to develop stories and characters.
All in all, the AWEsome book club would give Lily Out of Bounds high marks (we didn't get a chance to vote a rating yet) and are looking foreward to more books about Lily, Vee and Colby.
