Both of Douglas R. Cobb's books, Lily Unleashed: The Case Files of Lily and PAWS, previously released and newly released, Lily and PAWS: The Ghosts of Summer fall under the YA category. Personally, I applaud Douglas for not pandering to the mass marketing publishing industry's notion that YA books need to be written at a lower reading level with plain words. He is not afraid to put a $10.00 word in where a .05˘ word would suffice, but I consider that a great thing. When I was a young reader I loved to learn new words, fumbling through the dictionary and gaining a sense of satisfaction once found. Nowadays kids can search new words on the computer a lot quicker so why not challenge their minds. As a journalist, for years I was told to dumb down my articles to the average reading level of America (8th grade), and I refused; however, parents often complimented me on my use of vocabulary because their kids were looking up the words to know how I described their sports performance. So, I'm in Douglas' corner on his writing style.

Douglas deserves a second round of applause for stretching his young readers' imaginations. As we all visualize stories as we read them, our YA readers will be asked to exercise their minds one step further by visualizing a reality which includes a secondary set of illusions. Lily is a mind controlling pterodactyl whom the Quince family sees as a terrier except 8th grader Celeste Quince. Without spoiling the stories, the adventures include our heroine Lily with PAWS (Private Army of Warrior Sleuths) and their nemesis SNURFLES ( Super Nefarious Union of Rascals Formidably Linked in Everlasting Solidarity). All the members of PAWS have the ability to cloud peoples' minds so we see them as various breeds of dogs, but none are what they seem.... This entire concept is fresh and exciting and so very cute!!! Written in a way that keeps a smile on your face throughout!!! It was a lot of fun and I am going to tell my daughters about it and I bet they'll want the collection!!!
This is a terrific book for any age!!!

More About the Author

Douglas R. Cobb was born in Illinois and attended the University of Illinois, earning a BA in Rhetoric. Then, at Arizona State University, Douglas earned a Master's in English, and at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, he earned a Master's in Secondary Education. Little Rock is where he met his wife, Beth. He now lives in Fort Smith, Arkansas, which features prominently in his novel Lily and PAWS: The Ghosts of Summer, Book Two of his The Case Files of Lily and PAWS series. Book One is titled Lily, Unleashed. Douglas published his third YA novel, My Brother the Zombie (The Zombie Revolution: Book One), on May 27, 2012. These books are now available as paperbacks as well as Kindle ebooks. Douglas has also just recently published the third book in his series, The Case Files of Lily and PAWS,titled Lily Solves Them All. At just over 96,000 words, it is the longest novel in the series thus far. In it, Lily, Celeste, & PAWS must solve 7 cases using the methods of 7 famous literary and Silver Screen detectives, or risk being made laughingstocks by their newest arch-enemy, Professor Polynesia.
Douglas Cobb's latest book is the historical novel/Western, Crossing The Dead Zone. It is about the life, times, and adventures of Deputy U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves, one of the first African American lawmen West of the Mississippi. During his long and illustruous career, Reeves arrested over 3,000 men and killed 14 in the line of duty. He served the court of Judge Isaac C. Parker, the Hanging Judge, and also rode the trail of outlaws throughout Texas and the Indian Territory in Oklahoma. The book and movie True Grit are both very awesome, but many people who know about Bass Reeves say that he displayed "truer grit" throughout his career as a lawman than even the great Rooster Cogburn. This novel is at the low price of just .99 cents, and is a fantastic gift for the holidays or for any time of the year.
Just in time for Christmas, Douglas has published a new addition to his series, The Case files of Lily and PAWS. It's a Christmas novella, called Lily and PAWS: Christmas Capers. It has characters that have come to be well known and loved, and introduces some new characters, as well. It's a funny, supenseful, page-turning book that is sure to become a holiday classic.
Douglas and Beth have a twenty-two-year old son, Ben (Dexter Quince in the series), and a seventeen-year-old daughter, Kaitlin (Celeste in the series). He has always had a love for writing, but was finally motivated to write Lily, Unleashed, by his daughter's prompting him to write about her "dog," Lily, who is featured on the covers of the series. Douglas's son, Ben, appears on the cover of My Brother the Zombie (The Zombie Revolution: Book One).
