Is a Four Year Old's Dead Mother Tormenting Marie, or is She Simply Insane?, May 13, 2011
This review is from: Lily - QUICK READ (Quick Reads) (Paperback)
Unable to cope with a miscarried child, or understand that she was just another pretty face to get between the sheets with and was not making love as she pictured, lonely 17 year old Marie's life hasn't turned out the way she thought it would. Her mother abandoned her as a mentally challenged baby, and she's lived with her grandma ever since, who she is very dependant on now. Her grandma books Marie into sessions with Dr Slade where Marie reveals she is seeing her daughter at various times in the street but is yet to approach her. Over many sessions Dr Slade thinks he has gotten through to Marie that these children she sees aren't really her miscarried child now grown up. Marie has decided to lie and let him believe this to make him happy. Feeling sorry for the mentally handicapped girl, Dr Slade offers her a live in job in his home in the country for six weeks, basically being a companion for his four year old daughter, since the nanny will not be able to start until after then. There along with a live in housekeeper who simply doesn't have time to spend with the child and do her duties, Dr Slade thinks Marie and Amy will mutually benefit from spending time together.
Initially Marie loves it there, she loves Amy and has plans to try and convince Dr Slade to let her move in full time. However Amy tells her she talks to her mum on her old mobile phone, and won't let anyone but her mother tuck her in at night. Marie knows Lily the mother is dead, but wonders if like the way she can see her unborn child, if Lily can somehow actually communicate with Amy. Soon though Lily is also in communication with Marie, it is evident she sees Marie as a threat to taking her place and wants her gone.

Spooky!, January 20, 2008
This review is from: Lily - QUICK READ (Quick Reads) (Paperback)
Lily by Adèle Geras is a ghost story told by Marie, a young woman who is haunted by two ghosts. The first is the infant manifestation of Zoe, the baby that she tragically miscarried during her teenage pregnancy. She is not believed, and is treated for a supposed psychological condition.
The reader is sucked into Marie's life and I found myself living the story with her. When she starts a new job looking after the daughter of her psychiatrist, things start to go wrong for her and life becomes increasingly scary. Her charge, Amy, grows to love her but events conspire against her, leading to a terrifying climax to the story and a breathless conclusion.
Lily is a great story, which left me hungry to read more by Adèle Geras.
