Book Description

Meg Embry has a closet full of dreams. Her problem is that all of the hangers are empty. A doting granddaughter, a submissive fiancé and a struggling business owner, she doesn't know if who she is, is who she wants to be. Will she end up like her kind-hearted but felonious grandfather, her eccentric, vodka-drinking grandmother or her moonstruck aunt? If she's honest, the best answer is "none of the above."

Armed with nothing more than the support of her two closest friends, Cory who can make her laugh and Charlotte who will let her cry and the forbidden but growing interest in a handsome stranger, Meg learns that what she wants isn't necessarily what she needs, and that sometimes love, family and betrayal are bound together forever by lily white lies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Crisp and witty, a page turner for sure. August 9, 2011
By ALC
Format:Kindle Edition
Lily white lies are meant to protect loved ones from harsh truths. Not done out of spite, but out of love. But what happens when the person being protected no longer wants to be shielded, wants to know what really happened, and won't settle for anything less?

Though the story is labeled romance, and boy are the romantic elements done very well, it is also about what lengths a person would go to for the love of their family and the slow untangling of years worth of lies and deception.

The characters in this novel are amazingly well done. Each are vivid and unique with a voice and personality of their own. And though you root for the main character and hope she finds her prince and happily ever after, it is the secondary characters that you will be most drawn to and fall in love with. You can't help it. Even the most rotten of the bunch will capture a place in your heart.

It is beautifully written, crisp and witty. It's a perfect read for a someone looking for a bit of romance tangled with a bit of mystery as well. It is a page turned for sure, and highly recommended.

You will not be disappointed with the writing style, the story, or the outcome.

Wonderful read, great characters and good ending! Didn't leave you with the feeling of "now, why did you have to end it that way?!" Parts had me laughing, parts had me crying, and parts just had me contemplating life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lily White Lies July 8, 2011
By china
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have to first simply say that the description doesn't do the book justice! While it is a romance, it's that and so much more. It's filled with richly colorful characters that you can visualize; I can't pick my fave, between Joker, Gram, her stoic grandfather, her girlfriends - I love them all! And Meg, who found her inner courage to expect the life she deserves.
I love how the love story unfolds. The main character Meg delves into the secrets and dysfunction of her family, with a twist, or two! And the 'close enough to reality' factor is there, tying it up at the end beautifully. A thoroughly enjoyable read! I started it in the morning and finished it that night - I couldn't put it down! Definitely a must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Started reading could not stop June 21, 2011

I ordered this book Sunday, received it this morning and finished it this evening. Excellent read! It was catergorized under romance but the author delved deeper into issues such as rape and a whole lot of family dysfunction. There is a romance as you would expect, but there is also a love story, played out in a journal that unravels the secrets of the past. I didn't just fall in love with the main characters, the secondary characters were just as richly drawn. As I said, excellent read, and the bachelorette party, well, I won't be the spoiler. I guarantee you can't read this book without being drawn into their world. Gotta love Joker Ellis! A real page turner

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read, but filled with mood swings September 11, 2012

I have to admit the beginning of the book almost turned me off. But, I am glad I continued to read. The relationship between the main character and her friends was great. Some facets of her relationship with her ex-boyfriend didn't ring true, especially after the breakup. Much of the book was somewhat depressing. Then the mood would change to unrealistic (the bachelorette party) to sad and teary (the nursing home scenes.) One the whole, I did enjoy the book, even the ending which I felt was a bit predictable. The author knows how to string you along so you keep turning pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real life characters June 27, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book has to attributes that had I known beforehand, would have kept me from buying it. BUT, I am glad I didn't know beforehand because I would have missed out on a truly wonderful story. First, I generally don't care for books with dream scenes or journal entry scenes. Generally speaking, I find too often that each are used by authors who either run out of story or who do not possess the experience to keep the conflict alive thus resorting to dreams, journals, flashbacks and the like. This author, however, used each with skill. They were not essential in helping to move the story along, but were used to add to an already interesting story.
I felt the pacing of the story was rhythmic, an easy read with no dead spots or accelerations that felt unnatural.
I had read snippets beforehand regarding the bachelorette party and although it was refreshingly original, that was not the part of the book that I would call 'the best part'. All of the characters are real and easy to empathize with, but it is the relationship between the main character, Meg, and her family, Meg and her friends that made what could have been a mediocre novel great. This book covers all aspects of family, from love to embarrassment, through secrets and acknowledgment and finally acceptance, all the while following one women on her journey to find out if she is on the right life path.
