I love this little cookbook. I feel that these recipes are AUTHENTIC Cajun. I was pleasantly surprised when I read through this cookbook. The personal stories leading to each recipe gives the reader a real sense of what is cajun and what cajun cooking is about and I found them charming. The ingredients are simple, economical and readily available in my own pantry.
I would have liked to see many more photos in this book and culinary definitions at the end of the book, but these are recipes I can definitely make in reality. This is my "go to" book for Cajun recipes.
There are a few typos that need to be addressed and corrected by the author. My personal experience has been that most occur during the upload process to Amazon so I have simply overlooked them.

This is a fine cookbook with plenty of good, old fashioned cajun recipes and a few stories thown in. There were a few typos and formatting issues, which always makes me a little nervous to recommend a book. But this one, overall, is quite good.

First of all, this book is more or less a confession of lost love, a pining for a first wife and her family (specifically, Lily, his then mother-in-law). He talks about HER cooking and HER recipes and HER Cajun background. Not that I'm saying that Lily should have written this herself, but it seems less emphatic when they are second-hand recipes.

Still, there are some good recipes here. Just not a lot of them. And some of the sections are just odes to memories of food, such as the coffee & chicory section. The only reason it was included was to highlight how much he missed her coffee. That's it. No recipe, no in-depth exploration of the beverage, no comprehensive history.

Almost every recipe ends with how much he misses this way of life and his former in-laws. "But, we move on, and it was probably for the best all around," and so on it goes. We get that you miss your ex and her fam. Write a book about that, then. Don't bill it as a cookbook if you're just going to pine through most of it and not spend the time sharing more recipes.

Reading and food, what could be better? Well, I got this book free for my Kindle at Amazon, that's pretty cool! This is not only a great little cookbook, it's also a look at the life of the author, his ex-wife and her family. His ex-mother in law is Lily, the best Cajun cook he's ever known.

I loved all the stories about the family, they sure are an interesting bunch! I don't know if I loved the stories or the recipes the most. It's a close race! There were lots of recipes that sounded really good, and most sounded simple to make. I'd definitely recommend this book everyone who likes this type of book.

One of the greatest cities to visit because of the food is New Orleans. I had never ever tried so many of the recipes from there. I had a class with Chef Prudhomme but when I arrived home I did not have too many recipes. We invited some of the people who had come with us on our trip and made many dishes that we had tried. However, most were not cajun.. so I was very happy to see this recipe book..
