2.0 out of 5 stars boring book...
hard to think of a book about a murder as boring but this one is. It is mostly transcripts of the confession and the trial and just nothing very interesting. Neither victim nor killer are very sympathetic people even before the crime, as portrayed. Also the murder itself was fairly commonplace as such crimes go (not saying that any murder is less terrible than another...)...

5.0 out of 5 stars Chilling insight into grisly murder, October 18, 2009

I started this book at bedtime one night, and couldn't stop reading until I was finished. Although the back of the book lets readers know the outline of the story, the thoughtful weaving of the background tales with the aftermath of the murder kept me engaged and turning pages quickly. The book features an interesting cast of characters, and saves several crucial pieces of information for a big reveal at the end. This book is fast-paced, well-structured, and written by authors with obvious care for detail and knowledge of the setting of the crime.

Although I was not previously aware of the crime I found the events more bizarre and terrifying than most detective novels. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy crime/detective novels, non-fiction crime writing, or television crime shows like CSI. The authors do a nice job of taking readers inside the investigation to explain how the police discovered the shocking truth behind the "disappearance" of a young wife and mother.

One caution, I would advise readers not to look at the photo pages in the middle of the book until they have finished reading. I felt some of the captions gave away a bit too much of the story.

hard to think of a book about a murder as boring but this one is. It is mostly transcripts of the confession and the trial and just nothing very interesting. Neither victim nor killer are very sympathetic people even before the crime, as portrayed. Also the murder itself was fairly commonplace as such crimes go (not saying that any murder is less terrible than another...) but the fact that he dismembered the body in order to hide it, is what the sensationlists (and journalists) loved best...He comes off as stupid, inept and dim-witted, not exactly a hardened criminal and I do not think that a history of domestic abuse was ever proved. If anything, Tara's journal indicates she was the one who picked on her husband. I think a fight got out of hand. Bad enough, but not to explain the way the book cover descibes it as "a murderous rage"and a "sharp blade" as though he slashed her to death...just a typical instant book from journalists on a crime that for a while was in national media...

5.0 out of 5 stars You wont read a better true crime novel than this one this year!, October 21, 2009
This review is from: Limb from Limb (Paperback)
One of the best true crime books I have read in awhile. I started reading this book having some assumptions and expectations, these were quickly dispelled. The authors used a very easy to read narrative style at the beginning of the book and then built on this style as they progressed through the book. I found myself having a different opinion of the main characters in this book by the end of the story. I found myself having empathy and understanding for one of the main protagonists in this book and that surprised me. The authors journalistic and detached style (Just the facts approach to what happened) helped me come to my own conclusions about what I feel really happened, and this is what was important to me. This is a thinking persons true crime book, you will not be disappointed!

This was a book I could hardly put down. It was well written and fast shipping. You won't be disappointed. What a monster. I pray for Tara's family and children. Stephen Grant will have many years to think about this horrible act he committed, hopefully he'll never get out of prison.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Read., January 16, 2012

This was a well written but shocking story. Unlike some other true crime stories though, this one doesn't get completely bogged down in replaying the whole court trial. It stays focussed on the personal experience of this tragedy. My heart goes out to Tara's children and especially her sister. Highly recommend to true crime fans.

2.0 out of 5 stars Typical Onesided Detroit Media Coverage, November 19, 2009
This review is from: Limb from Limb (Paperback)
I live in the Metro Detroit area as a few others have mentioned here also. I watch the entire case through the one sided Detroit media that made this murder look more like a Judge Judy case then anything.

This book was totally one sided as it made the victim into a hero. This seems to be the case in the last several years as any attractive female automatically gets star status throughout the nation. NOt sure if its just me but the media lately has been trying to portray all males to be monsters. In this case, Mr Grant was a monster but the media did a great job of covering up his wife Taras past as she seemed to be the abuser and the dominator. This of course does not justify what Steven did to her.

In the end, anyone that reads this book that has a fair mind will see that it did nothing but favortize Tara because she was a "Working Mom". Why not just tell the story and let others make their own judgement??

The Detroit media did nothing but turn this story into a carnival act by demonizing him when in fact, the police could have simply let him die in the fridigid cold. He was just minutes from slipping into hypothermia. Instead, they rescued him like they were a bunch of heros. WHY??

This book didnt even come close to "In Cold Blood". Not even in the same league!

I started reading this book and couldn't put it down. I read a lot of true crime books and this rates among the top, with "In cold blood" and "Helter Skelter".
