1.0 out of 5 stars Limelite Luv & Niteclubz by Da Brat, July 20, 2003
This review is from: Limelite Luv & Niteclubz (Bonus DVD) (Audio CD)
In 1994 the foul-mouthed tomboy known as Da Brat released her debut album, Funkdafied, via So So Def records and went down in the history books as the first ever solo female rapper to score a platinum album. In 1996, Da Brat followed up her debut with another platinum album Anuthatantrum, which was easily her best material to date. After taking a while off she again returned with yet another platinum album 2000's Unrestricted. Now with the So So Def records getting a second wind (thanks entirely to Bone Krusher's infectious hit 'Never Scared'), Jermaine Durpi is releasing Da Brat's fourth (and final?) album, however its clearly not ready for the retail market.

Shawntaee` Harris (aka Da Brat) is most widely known for her tart tongue and rapid fast delivery, but there are times on this album when she raps as quickly as possible when there really is no reason for it, example being "World Premiere" the album's sole posse cut. The first single "In Luv Witchu" is boring, repeatative hip pop that has been done over and over again. In fact, there is nothing on this album Da Brat can call her own.

Truth is she sold out. She went from a tomboy represtin' the streets & gangsta rap to a sex obsessed whore. She stole DJ Entice's "I F**ked Your Boyfriend", a big techno hit amoung white teenagers and made it "Boom!" the album's incredibly weak second single. Besides a weak performance from Da Brat, we get to hear Mariah Carey at her absolute worst ('Got a Thing 4 U') & an even a disappointing performance from neo-soul new-comer Anothony Hamiliton ('I Was the One') who's promosing vocals blessed the Nappy Root's "Po' Folks".

I highly advise fans to skip this release because its not the same artist that we fell in love with, its not the rebellious tomboy, its not the pioneer of the female movement in the rap game, its a cheap copy of such female rap garbage as Trina, Khia & Gangsta Boo, talentless women who make it based on a shock appeal alone. If its not by Foxy Brown or Lil Kim, I'm no longer going to be checking for females in the game. This is purley uninspirational copy cat trash.

3.0 out of 5 stars a little below average, November 9, 2006

With references to Spongebob, Da Brat shows lack of effort or just loss of skill. Luckily, the production and guest appearances are on point.

3.0 out of 5 stars Far From One Star..., August 10, 2003
This review is from: Limelite Luv & Niteclubz (Bonus DVD) (Audio CD)
This album is far from a one star album like some have already given. To me a one-star album is total trash without any good songs, beats, or lyrics. Da Brat is a lyrical tongue twister with swift flows not some wack Lil Kim wannabe like most new female rappers. With that said her first single was underwhelming. The beat is too flat and slow for Da Brat. She needs a menacing track such as `Who I Am". But that's not to say she can't rock the slower tracks; "Ain't Got Time To Waste", "I Was The One" and "Gotta Thing For You" are some tight tracks. But with the good tracks there are bad tracks. As many have already mentioned, `Boom' is beyond wack...probably the worst song Da Brat has ever done. Nonetheless she does redeem herself on "Chuuch" and "Got It Poppin". She ends the album perfectly with "Gushy Wushy" (what a stupid name title) which has Da Brat KILLING the track and the beat is straight ridah; vintage Brat.

Like all Da Brat albums this one ends short just under 45 minutes, which to me, is good. No stupid filler skits, and not enough time for her to get on your nerves. Every song is solid, save for the ultra terrible "Boom" and is good to let play straight through. Don't be fooled by Da Brat's first underwhelming single. This album is a banger for da summertime. Pick it up.

4.0 out of 5 stars This Album is not as good as Unrestricted but very solid!, August 7, 2003

I don't know why sooo many people are saying that this Album is not good and not worth listening to/ buying because this is still a very entertaining album! This album of course is not as good as Unrestricted but, what album is better than Unrestricted?! I have over 400 CDs and Unrestricted is my all time fav and it is the literal definition of a CLASSIC. This album does not measure up to Unrestricted but it is still very very good, let alone worth buying! Other artists like Eve, and Khia have made less than steller recent albums but this one far surpasses them. I can admit that I was expecting more from this album but it doesn't mean that it was no good. It was only disappointing that the album only had 11 songs, but with a new album from our beloved Da Brat, i am very pleased regardless of the number of tracks- Don't Hate! I demise that the only reason why peeps are trippin' is because they have been used to being spolied like a "brat" with unbelievably great music (Unrestricted and Anuthatantrum), or they are hatin', tryin' to rep for other female rappers, but anyways, this CD is hot, and the bookelt inside is BLAZIN'. For TRUE da brat fans, get it becasue it the beats make everybody bop they heads- hehe and no ones better than the one and only da brat- you my ni**a fo life baby!!! As long as Foxy, Da Brat, Kim, and Missy represent, i all ears!

3.0 out of 5 stars Just to clear up the origin of the song "Boom"..., January 22, 2005

After reading through these reviews, I see that a few people do not know that the song "Boom" is based on "BOOM! I Got Your Boyfriend" by MC Luscious, a hip-pop/dance song from around 1992. This song had a remix which changed the lyrics to "boom I F'd your boyfriend," which is the part used by Da Brat in her song. Check out the MC Luscious video on Launch if you are curious. Anyway, I think that this is a pretty good album overall, although not as good as her earlier ones. She's still one of the most talented rappers out there.

3.0 out of 5 stars Brat, you let me down on this one., August 12, 2004
This review is from: Limelite Luv & Niteclubz (Bonus DVD) (Audio CD)
This is without a doubt Brat's worst album. I was pumped for it because of the song "In Luv Wit Chu". And because 'Unrestricted' was banging. But when I heard it, I was sorely disappointed. The beats were mediocre and she seems to have shyed away from the hard image her fans have fallen in love with. Now I ain't gonna lie, there are some good songs on here: "In Luv Wit Chu", "Boom", "Gushy Wushy", and "Got It Poppin'", but other than that....it's just not HER. I hope her next one is MUCH better.

As usual the Da Brat hits you with a little originality,a splash of ole school and a dash of A.T.L and Chi-town. The album is a brilliant tribute to the Veteran rappers such as M.C.Lyte, Salt n Pepa, and L.L.Cool J. With lyrics like "When I retire, I'll be worshipped like an old battleship", Brat was obviously feeling like giving thanks to the predecessors. There are hits such as "WHO I AM"(a definite banger),"BOOM" (a salt n pepa re-make),"GOT IT POPPIN'"(Brat Club Banger),"Gushy Wushy"(another hit-in-the making). The CD also has a cee-lo styled number classically named "CHUCH". I was about to sleep on this album myself because it was not the typical Brat CD. The Cd is "LIKE DAT" so "GO COP DAT DISC and DVD!".She has also blessed her fans with an entertaining DVD. I would like to hear a couple of remixes and more videos from these great tracks.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Solid Comeback Effort, July 28, 2003
By
This review is from: Limelite Luv & Niteclubz (Bonus DVD) (Audio CD)
Well...a lot of people have been sh**tin all over Da Brat latest record, "Limelite, Luv, and Niteclubs"...which is disappointing being as though this is a very solid, and pretty good listen for a rapper we've heard less and less of in the past couple of years. It's a tad short, but it definitely packs a punch on certain songs.

World Premiere (2.5/5)Waste of time...

In Love Witchu (4/5)I like the song and the video and all...but it couldve been better...

Ain't Got Time To Waste (5/5) This is my 2nd favorite song on here for real...I love the beat, the whole flow...somethin you can bop to...

Gotta Thing For You (5/5)I love this song for real, and Mariah rocks this one...it's my favorite.

Who I Am (4.5/5)

Boom (5/5) She a lil' freaky when she wanna be, aint she...

Got It Poppin' (3/5)

Chuch (3.5/5)A total waste of Cee-Lo...disappointing.

Get Somebody (2/5)

I Was The One (2/5)

Gushy Wushy (5/5)This is my 2nd favorite song...I love the fast-paced rhythm of this joint.

3.0 out of 5 stars her flow, and the last 5 songs saved this cd, April 25, 2005
This review is from: Limelite Luv & Niteclubz (Bonus DVD) (Audio CD)
she needs more tracks like the last 5 the first 6 tracks are dull, underwhelming and dry.the production is deader than a door knob, the cd doesn't pick up till the last five tracks, where she shreds the cd to pieces!! with her toungu twisting flow!.those songs were the saving grace for this album.good thing it was short because if their was 4 or 5 more bad tracks this would have been a two star cd.
