Book Description

April 1, 1994
A calculus formula, a calculating boy, a young woman who is intelligent but unwise — the ingredients for a gripping story and the thematic fulcrum for The Limit of Delta Y Over Delta X, a rivetting new collection of stories by Halifax writer Richard Cumyn. In this idiosyncratic collection of stories, Cumyn explores the surface tension between men and women and those rare moments of insight that often accompany loss. Casting his imagination over the territory extending from adolescence to middle-age, Cumyn finds plenty to contemplate and lots to laugh about as the men and women of his stories brushup against each other, sometimes violently, and often humorously.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

A calculus formula, a calculating boy, a girl who is intelligent but unwise — these are the ingredients of the gripping story at the heart of Richard Cumyn’s new collection. Human relations motivate The Limit of Delta Y Over Delta X, especially the surface tension between men and women. But even looking at the darker side of humanity, Richard Cumyn finds plenty to laugh about. “The Sound He Made” dares readers to snicker at Bam’s bold violence, and “Shel Do the Right Thang” is a funny fantasia on love and marriage.

About the Author

A native of the Ottawa Valley, Richard Cumyn now lives and works in Halifax. His articles have appeared in The Ottawa Citizen, The Kingston-Whig Story, The London Free Press, and Bluenose Magazine. His fiction has been well published.

3.0 out of 5 stars Delta Ho over Delta Hum, December 31, 2003

This review is from: The Limit of Delta Y Over Delta X (Paperback)
Maybe this is this author's early work. Maybe it's his first attempt at stories. I just can't tell. But what I know is they are not sparkling stories. They are heavy with first pages of naming characters followed by an attempt to make them do something. Often the reader loses the thread even of the plot. I saw a novel by this author today and I suppose someone out there likes him -- I certainly hope he writes better in the later work than this one. I'm reading Flannery O'Connor's short stories right now too and let me say these are AMAZING. She's really a writer of talent. Buy her complete stories before you buy this work by Cumyn.
