I am a lifelong Marmite lover but this XO Marmite is in a class by itself and I am completely hooked on it. The box says it has a "stronger taste" than ordinary Marmite. I consider that to be somewhat inaccurate. It is more flavorful rather than stronger tasting. There's a wonderful tangy taste that is almost (but not quite) fruity and a lot less of the harsh burn that you get with the regular Marmite (e.g. when you spread it too thickly). If you like to spread your Marmite you should try this. If you just make drinks or add it to stews, I think the difference is less noticeable. Buying it here is quite expensive as the seller ships it from England - it's still worth it (but remember I am now addicted to XO). I hope Unilever makes this a permanent addition to the Marmite product range and that it becomes more readily (and more cheaply) available in the US.

There's not that much of a surprise when trying Marmite XO. It's just as you'd expect: stronger, deeper flavor than regular Marmite. Not much else can be said. If you love Marmite, you will love Marmite XO that much more.

This Marmite is more powerful, more flavourful, and more Marmite than should be exported from the UK. As an American I've fallen in love with regular Marmite, however XO has proven to be a radically different experience. Opening the jar, I began to sweat in anticipation and uncontrollably exclaimed, "Cor blimey guvnah, this dead horse ain't for the billy lids!!" The aroma was so intoxicating I had to brace myself against an ambulatory dresser that I never remembered purchasing. My first smear of the gooey black ichor was met with the faintest tintinnabulation of 'God Save the Queen' and as a single tear rolled down my cheek it was transformed into a fresh knob of Devonshire butter, landing squarely at the edge of my butter knife. 'quite' I muttered under my breath as I completed the ritual. Seated now in a highback chair of no known origin I knew no consternation as I took the first bite. As i finished the sandwich, and the deafening cacophony of God Save the Queen was met with a quiet nod. I stroked my handlebar moustache and wondered what if anything was missing from the evening. From the sitting room a woman exclaimed, "you shant meet the train in time if you tarry any further darling. Now make haste! the lads are surely waiting at the cockleberry pub with a tall lager." I'm now a 40 year old Ackley Eustice Pilkington thanks to Marmite XO. Splendid.

Yeast extract spread. With butter on a warm bread at breakfast. Either you love it or hate it.
Some years ago I could not understand how one can eat this kind of stuff and today I love it. I can not have a breakfast anymore without it.

I tried the XO version for the first time. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is:

* Yes it is has stronger (better) as the standard Marmite, but not that much
* It is a bit more difficult to spread because a bit thicker
* My favorite yeast extract is the Swiss Cenovis, unfortunately difficult to find in USA. Marmite XO is good, but not as good as Cenovis, which is one class higher in taste and more easy to spread.

The pot is almost empty now, but as the the price of this XO one has almost doubled since I ordered it, and as I can not find Cenovis As I can not find Cenovis, I will stay with the standard Marmite version for now.

My only complaint is how long it took to ship from the UK to the United States. But, that's not Marmite's fault. I am a recent devotee of Marmite, having only found out about it, and that I could get it here a couple months ago. After devouring 2 bottles of the regular, I had to order this. Man, am I glad I did. I mean Marmite is good, but if I am going to pay a premium for it anyway (125g jar here for $6), then $15 for a jar twice the size, with twice the taste is worth it to me. Thanks for making this available to me.

What should one expect from an "older, matured, stronger" Marmite? For me, it was more gooey, savory, spreadable ultra-umami, and that's exactly what I got. The difference between this elixir and the standard stuff is subtle, but immediately apparent. Marmite XO delivers the familiar basic flavor, but somehow amplified, though not in the sense of being overpowering or too concentrated. In fact, I found the "XO factor" to be quite delicate, and easily overpowered in the presence of other flavorful ingredients such as, say, a sharp cheddar or onions. Accordingly, the simple but classic support of white bread and butter (or margarine) makes for the best way to enjoy this special treat.

Oh, and one more thing... those who've always felt that the classic Marmite is "perfectly horrid" will not change their minds upon tasting this variety, either.

For me, Marmite is an acquired taste. That's not a bad thing. Kind of like mustard on a hot dog - did you like mustard the very first time you had it? I discovered it from British friends when I visited the UK on 14 separate occasions. Being from the USA, it took having UK friends to discover it. I like it a lot. I like Vegemite too. The limited edition Marmite is nice. It's a bit smoother flavored, a bit less perceived saltiness and kind of richer in flavor but not really "different". It's still definitely Marmite. I feel it's a slightly improved version. My new bucket list item is to appear in a UK Marmite commercial as the American that just discovered this "Limited" Marmite and goes after it like he's going to the Alaskan Gold Rush.
