Ms Strumpf's book is an interesting mix of travelogue and beginner's guide to collecting Limoges boxes. Her section on the city of Limoges is very well done and interesting, and not readily available elsewhere. Additionally, her basic information on the boxes and tips for collectors is quite useful to someone just starting out, or without an in-depth background. There were some disappointments in her book, however. For example, her bibliography is quite extensive, but there are some glaring and important omissions, such as the Sonking and Waterbrook-Clyde books. Her photographs are lovely, but the captions give no pertinent information regarding size, manufacturer, etc. And her history of Limoges porcelain is a retelling of local legends rather than grounded in detailed history. Again, this is a very good resource for someone newly interested in the boxes, but a serious collector may find it a little light weight.

Major chapters include, History and Artistry of Limoges, Photo Journal, Fabrication, The Box Itself, Old and New Tales, and a chapter For The Collector. A comprehensive bibliography is provided and extensive lists of sources, manufacturers' marks, and a very complete bibiography. A beautiful and useful reference work. This book certainly does not contain every Limoges Box ever produced, but it provides information about many a box. Limoges collectors will love this volume.

5.0 out of 5 stars The first comprehensive book on antique Limoges boxes!, December 6, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Limoges Boxes (Paperback)
This book was a work of passion and love for the author who collaborated with many experts using excellent references. This book provides information on antique Limoges boxes versus the W-Clyde books that include brand new boxes. If you are interested in antique boxes recommend Debby DuBay's third book: Collecting Hand Painted Limoges Porcelain: Boxes to Vases

I purchased this book after I went to a lecture in Dallas, TX by the expert and author of Living With Limoges, Antique Limoges at Home and Collecting Hand Painted Limoges Porcelain, Boxes to Vases, Debby DuBay. I love any book that has photographs of Debby's collection of fantastic Limoges. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book on ANTIQUE Limoges Boxes, January 8, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Limoges Boxes (Paperback)
Ms Strumpf is a wonderful, enthusiastic author who has shared her knowledge of Limoges boxes -- along with her resources!! This is the only book that has helped me find antique shops that actually sell antique Limoges boxes! Through her book I have been able to acquire several antique boxes for my personal collection. (In addition, she has mentored several authors to include Debby DuBay, author of Living With Limoges.) I applaud Ms Strumph for being one of the only authors who has collaborated with other authors on the subject of Limoges and for providing good information to lovers of ANTIQUE Limoges boxes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Limoges Boxes, A Comprehensive Guide, July 21, 2000
This review is from: Limoges Boxes (Paperback)
As a professional in this field and a collector of porcelain for most of my life, I found this book to be exactly what is needed for both the beginning and the longtime collector. There has been nothing previously published that deals with the subject so accurately, thoroughly and succinctly. Ms Strumpf has done a fine job. Her research was broadly based, see the bibliography, and in great depth. The information she provides will be of use to every collector of Limoges boxes. There is a lot to be learned by those who read this book. I found Modisette's photographs to be of excellent quality, showing great detail and very helpful for those who are just learning that all Limoges boxes are not equal. As well, Strumpf has, once and for all, dispelled the myth of there being one maker called Limoges. I have recommended this book to all of our collectors and have had glowing letters from those who have purchased it. To a person they are all finding it to be exactly how it was described, "The Definitive Work on Limoges Boxes". My thanks to Strumpf for a much needed text.

5.0 out of 5 stars By Far The Best Book on Limoges Boxes Available, July 20, 2000
This review is from: Limoges Boxes (Paperback)
As a professional and long time collector of Limoges boxes and of fine porcelain, I find this book extremely well researched and founded on a bed of fact. It is written so both professionals and lay people can read it and derive benefit from the information it imparts. I found no errors of fact at all.

Strumpf writes in an easy to read style and she presents her subject succinctly. Since I have done exhaustive reading on this topic I recognized Strumpf's sources and know that her research, and the sources used, were excellent.

The photographs presented the boxes exactly as they are seen in hand, a necessity if this book is to be used for a text on the subject.

I have strongly recommended it to all of my customers and will continue to do so to anyone wanting to learn about Limoges boxes. My customer feedback tells me that those who have read it, or even scanned it, are all enjoying it and learning from it. It dispels a good deal of the myth that surrounds these boxes, something that needed to be done and had never been done by any prior writer on the subject.

This is not just a coffee table type book. It is for the serious collector and for those who would be serious collectors. The Foreword to the book was written by one of the leading proponents in the field, the President of Chamart; Chamart being the company which first introduced Limoges boxes to the U. S. in 1965.
