4.0 out of 5 stars Great album by Julieta March 15, 2007
Format:Audio CD
I only recently become familiar with Venegas' music, despite the fact that she has been making albums for more than 10 years. This is her latest CD and is really great. What can one say: she writes her own songs (and those songs are really good, with catchy music and clever lyrics dealing mainly with the ups and downs in the relations between the sexes), she plays many instruments, she tries her hand with many musical styles (pop, rock, rap, Mexican folk, even tango). Her early albums were much more on the punk/rock side; she has softened her sound on her last two albums (though not the quality of the music). Some have criticized her for "selling out". Do not listen to them, Julieta. This is great music, with many great songs: the hit song "Me Voy" (great video, by the way), "Limon y Sal", "A Donde Sea", "Eres para Mi", "Mirame bien". Her album is both highly artistic and very listenable. Don't miss this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little bit of everything! May 12, 2007
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
If you like a CD with a wide range of sound, this is for you! Julieta Venegas has a rich, raspy voice that compliments any musical style. Some songs have a hip-hop feel to them, while others could almost be described as country music. Of course there's a definite Latino vibe throughout... This CD is one you can just put in the player and let it go, without having to hit the skip button.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice pop rock June 7, 2006
Format:Audio CD
As good as the previous cd (Si), this one has lots of romantic, and non so romantic, music rithms are very mixed very nice, from regga, pop, norteno, and her acordeon. Me voy is a catchy song, perhaps others songs are nicer in lyrics. I love the CD just got it, Im sure will make good sales.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crafty, Irresistible Alt-Pop at its BEST December 2, 2006
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Venegas is so good, in so many ways (singer, songwriter, instrumentalist), that the appeal of her songs crosses any ethnic musical "border." This being noted, the "latinisma" of her work is truly defining to her artistry. I don't see her music as having "gone commercial" at all. Her lyrics are too clever and incisive, her melodies too uncanny. This is not "commercial" music in that it plays to some basic, common denominator. It's SOUL music that is able to find widespread appeal because everyone with a real soul can relate. That's what the very best music is able to do--whether pop, rock, classical, alternative, jazz, what have you. Venegas is able to weave a tapestry of brilliance on this album with an amazing versatility that comes from her proficiency of gifts. Every track is superb to the ear and to the spirit. From the liberation and anthemic determination of "Me Voy," the almost Bjork-ish wisdom of "Limon y Sal," to the sensual urgency of "Es Para Mi," Venegas proves why she is one of the great, truly potent artists of contemporary Latin music. Mexico should be very proud. This woman has managed to be truly artistic and, simultaneously, listenable for a wide range of human beings. Not many can pull that off. The album is a knockout--enchanting and absolutely brimming with VIDA!

If a powerful musical celebration of the human spirit is "commercial," then this album proves that there is a very worthy and noble side to "commercial," too. Pop at it's best, and when it's THIS good, you don't NEED alternatives.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Work by a True Musician February 2, 2008
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Julieta Venegas is a rarity in the world of popular music. She is a studied musician, a talented composer, and a beautiful singer. This CD is her best so far. Her lyrics are a poetic exploration of love in its many manifestations and phases. I wish I had discovered her 15 years earlier.

I cannot recommend this CD enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Favorite Latin Pop Album January 23, 2008
Format:Audio CD
I listen to every type of music in the world - classics, opera, jazz, "world" music of every sort - Spanish, Italian, Near Eastern, Eastern European, Indian.... While a "gringo" from NY I speak Spanish pretty well and am big on Latin American music, and Julieta is one of my favorites. Have all her discs, love them all, but LIMON Y SAL is my favorite. Can't get enough of songs like "Canciones de Amor" "A donde sea" "Limon y Sal" "Me Voy" "Mirame bien" - I love them all! And I don't care about what all the head-bangers say - about how she sold out and went pop to make a lot of money. That's a lot of crap coming from angry fools stuck in a one note rut, incapable of change or development, or of looking outside of their own closed little niche. This girl can really rock, and with an accordion no less! And we love her for it, and also because she doesn't come out on stage dressed in nothing but her underware, like so many other latina divas. With Julieta - while a singualrly beautiful woman - it's all about the music - [...]
Love her music videos, too, especially "Primer Dia", "Limon y Sal", "Lento", "Me Voy" - really, all of them. But I'm tired of watching them on you-tube. Why don't they do a DVD with all this great stuff collected together - HQ?

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums October 6, 2007
Format:Audio CD
I cannot speak Spanish but I work in the Mexican communtiy in Houston. I work on jukeboxes and so I am pretty familiar with the different styles of Latin music.

But Julieta is really awesome and, to me, her sheer musical talent is worth buying this album. Julieta has a genius mind when composing her music and I can only hope that she will release some English albums.

I personally have two copies of this CD and recommend it to anyone. The music styles range across the board. The opening song Canciones de Amor has a country flavor to it. It is reminiscent of listening to the Eagles while driving on vacation.

Primer Dia is closest song to being hip hop and features a male vocalist (Dante Spinetta). The lively drum and bass on the song could make a great dance hit. From this song alone, I know Julieta had a great time making this album. The music shows she really poured out her soul and time to create it but this track shows how much fun she had while doing it.

The title track Limon y Sal is a dreamy romantic cumbia. Melodic beatlesque choruses of Julieta singing "ooh" and "ahh" create a dream landscape to this beautiul song. The beauty in the track is haunting and Julieta's voice raises chills on the body. Yet, the track is still fun and I can' help but smile thiking about Julieta singing "Yo te quiero con limon y sal". The last minute of the song again seems to be another nod to the Beatles and I can't help but wonder if this album shows Julieta is as much a genius as Lennon and McCartney.

De Que Me Sirve is a departure from the rest of the album. Julieta's accordion sounds lke something one might hear while floating in a gondola in venice passing some obscure night club.
