Great album by Julieta,
By
This review is from: Limon y Sal (Audio CD)
I only recently become familiar with Venegas' music, despite the fact that she has been making albums for more than 10 years. This is her latest CD and is really great. What can one say: she writes her own songs (and those songs are really good, with catchy music and clever lyrics dealing mainly with the ups and downs in the relations between the sexes), she plays many instruments, she tries her hand with many musical styles (pop, rock, rap, Mexican folk, even tango). Her early albums were much more on the punk/rock side; she has softened her sound on her last two albums (though not the quality of the music). Some have criticized her for "selling out". Do not listen to them, Julieta. This is great music, with many great songs: the hit song "Me Voy" (great video, by the way), "Limon y Sal", "A Donde Sea", "Eres para Mi", "Mirame bien". Her album is both highly artistic and very listenable. Don't miss this one.

If you like a CD with a wide range of sound, this is for you! Julieta Venegas has a rich, raspy voice that compliments any musical style. Some songs have a hip-hop feel to them, while others could almost be described as country music. Of course there's a definite Latino vibe throughout... This CD is one you can just put in the player and let it go, without having to hit the skip button.

Very Nice pop rock,

As good as the previous cd (Si), this one has lots of romantic, and non so romantic, music rithms are very mixed very nice, from regga, pop, norteno, and her acordeon. Me voy is a catchy song, perhaps others songs are nicer in lyrics. I love the CD just got it, Im sure will make good sales.

Crafty, Irresistible Alt-Pop at its BEST,

Venegas is so good, in so many ways (singer, songwriter, instrumentalist), that the appeal of her songs crosses any ethnic musical "border." This being noted, the "latinisma" of her work is truly defining to her artistry. I don't see her music as having "gone commercial" at all. Her lyrics are too clever and incisive, her melodies too uncanny. This is not "commercial" music in that it plays to some basic, common denominator. It's SOUL music that is able to find widespread appeal because everyone with a real soul can relate. That's what the very best music is able to do--whether pop, rock, classical, alternative, jazz, what have you. Venegas is able to weave a tapestry of brilliance on this album with an amazing versatility that comes from her proficiency of gifts. Every track is superb to the ear and to the spirit. From the liberation and anthemic determination of "Me Voy," the almost Bjork-ish wisdom of "Limon y Sal," to the sensual urgency of "Es Para Mi," Venegas proves why she is one of the great, truly potent artists of contemporary Latin music. Mexico should be very proud. This woman has managed to be truly artistic and, simultaneously, listenable for a wide range of human beings. Not many can pull that off. The album is a knockout--enchanting and absolutely brimming with VIDA!
If a powerful musical celebration of the human spirit is "commercial," then this album proves that there is a very worthy and noble side to "commercial," too. Pop at it's best, and when it's THIS good, you don't NEED alternatives.

A Great Work by a True Musician,
By
This review is from: Limon y Sal (Audio CD)
Julieta Venegas is a rarity in the world of popular music. She is a studied musician, a talented composer, and a beautiful singer. This CD is her best so far. Her lyrics are a poetic exploration of love in its many manifestations and phases. I wish I had discovered her 15 years earlier.
I cannot recommend this CD enough.

Favorite Latin Pop Album,
By Capt Bob (New York NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Limon y Sal (Audio CD)
I listen to every type of music in the world - classics, opera, jazz, "world" music of every sort - Spanish, Italian, Near Eastern, Eastern European, Indian.... While a "gringo" from NY I speak Spanish pretty well and am big on Latin American music, and Julieta is one of my favorites. Have all her discs, love them all, but LIMON Y SAL is my favorite. Can't get enough of songs like "Canciones de Amor" "A donde sea" "Limon y Sal" "Me Voy" "Mirame bien" - I love them all! And I don't care about what all the head-bangers say - about how she sold out and went pop to make a lot of money. That's a lot of crap coming from angry fools stuck in a one note rut, incapable of change or development, or of looking outside of their own closed little niche. This girl can really rock, and with an accordion no less! And we love her for it, and also because she doesn't come out on stage dressed in nothing but her underware, like so many other latina divas. With Julieta - while a singualrly beautiful woman - it's all about the music - [...]
Love her music videos, too, especially "Primer Dia", "Limon y Sal", "Lento", "Me Voy" - really, all of them. But I'm tired of watching them on you-tube. Why don't they do a DVD with all this great stuff collected together - HQ?

One of my favorite albums,
This review is from: Limon y Sal (Audio CD)
I cannot speak Spanish but I work in the Mexican communtiy in Houston. I work on jukeboxes and so I am pretty familiar with the different styles of Latin music.
But Julieta is really awesome and, to me, her sheer musical talent is worth buying this album. Julieta has a genius mind when composing her music and I can only hope that she will release some English albums. I personally have two copies of this CD and recommend it to anyone. The music styles range across the board. The opening song Canciones de Amor has a country flavor to it. It is reminiscent of listening to the Eagles while driving on vacation. Primer Dia is closest song to being hip hop and features a male vocalist (Dante Spinetta). The lively drum and bass on the song could make a great dance hit. From this song alone, I know Julieta had a great time making this album. The music shows she really poured out her soul and time to create it but this track shows how much fun she had while doing it. The title track Limon y Sal is a dreamy romantic cumbia. Melodic beatlesque choruses of Julieta singing "ooh" and "ahh" create a dream landscape to this beautiul song. The beauty in the track is haunting and Julieta's voice raises chills on the body. Yet, the track is still fun and I can' help but smile thiking about Julieta singing "Yo te quiero con limon y sal". The last minute of the song again seems to be another nod to the Beatles and I can't help but wonder if this album shows Julieta is as much a genius as Lennon and McCartney. De Que Me Sirve is a departure from the rest of the album. Julieta's accordion sounds lke something one might hear while floating in a gondola in venice passing some obscure night club. This is a track thatwon't please at first but becomes a favorite. And probably the catchiest song on the album is Eres para mi. The upbeat new wave beat is what first attracted me to the album. A hard track to define but one of the greatest on the album. If you have not heard the song and are familair with latin music, you need to crawl out from underneath your hole. Last but not least, Sin Documentos is the perfect song to end the album with. The song is in the style of traditional cumbias and I can feel the accordion racing along in my head. The song evokes a lot of Mexican images to my mind and makes me feel like I am being led through a strange land. Not knowing what the lyrics actually mean, I can only suspect this is exactly what Julieta was going for naming the song Sin Documentos. Now, I cannot write a review on Julieta without saying how beautiful she is. I am surprised she has not broken over to the English game. Who thought an accordion player would be sexy? Who thought bushy eyebrows on a woman were sexy? Julieta is about music and the looks are not the focus. Still, it is hard to get past how sexy she is. The album is a must have. It is among my favorite CDs period.

Love the constant accordian, and the addition of rappers Daniel Spinetta and Anita Tijoux on a couple of tracks makes this more interesting. The final track, "Sin Documentos", is heartbreaking.
Ms. Venegas uses a variety of styles, from cumbia to Euro disco. From track to track, you get something different.

I've liked Julieta Venegas for a long time and would consider this album one of her best. The songs are irresistible, with smart, catchy lyrics and rhythms that stay in your head all day. I especially like the songs "Me Voy," "Limon y Sal," and "Dulce Compania," but I could listen to the entire album over and over again. Her cover of "Sin Documentos" is especially good and was a pleasant surprise as a bonus track.

Still commercial, but with great lyrics,
By Luis Cancino "from Paranoias" (Sonora, Mexico) - See all my reviews

Julieta Venegas was at first an alternative artist. After her collaboration with Tijuana No, she started the Julieta Venegas y La Milagrosa project, which after some time disappears to direct to her solo career.
Her first album (Aqui) was so well welcome for the people who wanted a girl like her with great lyrics, and having her playing the accordion, was the best. Her second album (Bueninvento) was not really a "good invention" and came through without any good critics or songs to become hits. When "Si" appeared for sale, a lot of people got disappointed at her because she became so "commercial" and was criticized for wanting major sales, which of course she got. Her new album "Limon y Sal" is like the second part of the previous work: good lyrics, good music and collaborations that will give her some great sales as well as some number ones. Her first single "Me Voy" reminds us a little to her first album -her accordion sound- but with lyrics about all the stages in a relationship that might sound like her previous work. Some of the best songs are "Sin Documentos" (cover), "No Sere", "Eres Para Mi", "Te Voy a Demostrar", "Canciones de Amor" and "Primer Dia". |
