Meet Mr Lincoln,
This review is from: Lincoln (Mass Market Paperback)
I read this book years ago. It was the first time I came across the word "miasma" Now I think "Even Then?" even then Presidential aides were talking about the poison in Washington, DC ?The book is a great insight into the White House and the life of the 16th President. His masterful way with words, his intelligence, his sorrows and his hard won accomplishments. And yet, his freedoms - this was a man who could grow a beard and become unreconisable. Media coverage was not always kind to him, but at least he had some respite. This book tells the story of his wife and children as well as his Presidency and speech writers. It is a real insiders look at a great man with heavy challenges. And of course, it makes one wonder what has happened to strong / clear leadership in the United States. The nation was clearly divided then, as now. So what was different ? Perhaps military victory silenced his opposition, or certainly defeated them far more than an electoral victory could ever do. (I would honestly like to ask Mr David McCullough that question ) Read the book and make your own conclusions.

This review is from: Lincoln: A Novel (Audio Book)
I have been looking for this Gore Vidal gem for years. The public libraries around here don't even have this great audio version of Vidal's masterpiece on our sixteenth president. It is worth the money spent!
