Book Description

0740792563 978-0740792564 October 27, 2009 Andrews McMeel (October 27, 2009)
The Lincoln/Obama Inaugural Bible Collection commemorates the significance of January 20, 2009, the day that President Barack Obama was inaugurated, using the Lincoln Bible to take the presidential oath of office. Bridging the historic nature of both President Abraham Lincoln's and President Obama's inaugurations, this collection is a stunning keepsake that pays tribute to both men and the office of the U.S. president.

Housed in a deluxe clamshell box are:

* An exquisite replica of the Lincoln Inaugural Bible, a 1,280-page, 1853 Oxford University Edition, with the inscription of William Thomas Carroll, clerk of the Supreme Court, attesting to the fact that this was the Bible used for the inauguration of Lincoln, complete with the seal of the Supreme Court. The velvet-covered volume is framed with brass borders and has a brass clasp, authentic gilded edges, and two ribbon markers. (The original Bible was purchased by William Thomas Carroll, who provided it for Lincoln's inauguration because the Lincoln family Bible was packed and in transit from Springfield, Illinois, to Washington, D.C. Carroll gave the Bible to his wife and it is inscribed to her in the front. Mrs. Carroll later gave it to Mrs. Robert Todd Lincoln, the president's daughter-in-law. The Bible, which was gifted to the Library of Congress in 1928 by Mrs. Lincoln, has considerable wear and fading on the outer velvet covering. As it was not possible to duplicate this wear, this replica is made to look as close as possible to how it would have appeared in 1861.)

* A 2009 Inauguration Packet, including the official congressional invitation complete with photographs of the president and vice president, the official Inauguration Program, and the St. John's Prayer Service Program, which was held the morning of the inauguration.

* A 72-page booklet with Lincoln and Obama photos, memorabilia, historical facts, and observations, including President Lincoln's 1861 inaugural address and his Cooper Union address. Also in the booklet are President Obama's complete inaugural address and highlights from his speech on race in Philadelphia during the campaign.

* A booklet with a facsimile of the original Emancipation Proclamation and other versions published at the time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting gift idea of your favorite political junkie, December 22, 2009
This review is from: Lincoln/Obama Inaugural Bible Collection (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
When I first heard of this item, I was somewhat confused - who would want to buy a bible replica considering how you can buy a bible pretty easily? However, this set is actually an interesting gift idea of political junkies, particularly (though not exclusively) liberals. In addition to the bible (which looks beautiful), the set also comes with other inauguration paraphernalia. Unlike the silly refrigerator magnets and t-shirts, this set is actually a pretty nice memorabilia to celebrate American history. Check out the video on Amazon.com for more. However, I honestly don't know if it's worth the price - $63 on Amazon. It seems a bit steep to me. This set might have been a more popular gift idea a year ago than now - or for a hardcore Obamaphile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding facsimile for collector, January 10, 2010

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Lincoln/Obama Inaugural Bible Collection (Hardcover)
First, let me say that unlike most of the other reviewers for this item, I actually purchased it myself. And while I am a supporter of our President, the main reason that I bought it is that I am a book collector, especially of bibles. From that basis, this is an outstanding item and I cannot recommend it highly enough. What is inexplicable to me is that, for whatever reason, and having gone to the all trouble to create this facsimile, Amazon has done a very poor job of marketing it. For example, they do not indicate that the facsimile of the bible is exact, meaning that not only is the book reproduced, but also the handwriting on the original. This includes the certification on the back of the book by the clerk of the Supreme Court, William Thomas Carroll, who purchased the original bible for use in the Lincoln inaugural, complete with the seal of the Supreme Court--and note that the facsimile has an actual seal, not a picture of one. As indicated in other reviews, the bible is also beautiful in its own right, with a real velvet book cover and extremely shiny gilding on all sides.
Also included in the set are the various inaugural memorabilia, notably the official invitation and program--and these appear to actually be originals of these documents, not reproductions, which makes them highly collectible in their own right, let alone when included in such a finely produced set. The box that the set is placed in is of very high quality too, with the Presidential Seal in gold and covered in cloth in the official White House blue color. The other books and items in the set are also very worthwhile, especially the little booklet that includes the text of the inaugural addresses of both Presidents' Lincoln and Obama.
In short, this set is a collector's dream. It is astonishing to me that the set is sold at the price that it is given the trouble and expense it must have taken Amazon and the Library of Congress to produce such a high quality facsimile. One final note: among the handwriting on the front of the bible is what appears to be the price that William Thomas Carroll paid in 1861, which was the then considerable sum of $7. Now $7 in 1861 dollars is equivalent (according to an inflation calculator I consulted) of about $170 in 2010 dollars. Compare that to the price of this set to judge how good a value it represents!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling bit of history!, December 25, 2009
By
This review is from: Lincoln/Obama Inaugural Bible Collection (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I wasn't entirely sure what to expect when I opened this package. I knew it contained a replica of the Lincoln/Obama Inaugural Bible, but the product description was a little sketchy in terms of what this actually looked and felt like. But now that I've had a chance to handle and read this extraordinary bit of historically correct ephemera, I have to say it far exceeded my expectations.

What you get:

--A gorgeous blue felt "clamshell" style box with the Presidential seal on the cover embossed in gold.

--An replica of the Lincoln Inaugural Bible. It's 1200+ pages long, and smaller in width and length than a paperback (but much thicker). The Bible includes a beautiful gold clasp to keep it closed when not in used.

--A souvenir pack of 2009 Inauguration stuff, which includes replicas of an invitation, photos, and programs from various events.

--A medium-sized book of information about Lincoln and Obama, including both men's inaugural addresses.

--A copy of the Emancipation Proclamation plus additional versions from that era.

Although I was originally skeptical about the price of this set, I am most impressed with what you get for the asking price. This is a beautifully produced piece of history, and it will be a valued part of our family collection for generations to come.
