I enjoyed reading this book from cover to cover. It draws you in to the story so well, you feel like you know the characters. I was so caught up in what was happening, that when I read the last sentence, it brought tears to my eyes. One page shows 4 photos of Abraham Lincoln as he progressively ages. I covered up the dates and asked my husband how much time he thought had passed between the first photo and the last. He said, "about 20-25 years". He was shocked when I uncovered the dates to show that it was only 5 years. The war really took a toll on Lincoln. I knew he was a great man, but this book explains why. After reading this book, I have a much greater appreciation and understanding of the Civil War. I wish I had read this when I was taking American History in school.

This book is absolutely beautiful. I bought it when my 5th grader had a project on Abe Lincoln. This is a book of old newspaper articles and photos about Lincoln. It is interesting, and it makes a great coffee table book (it's very tall!) or gift.

A thoroughly researched and thoroughly accessible representation of Lincoln.

Denenberg relays the conflicts Lincoln faced and his determination in such simple and such powerful prose, and Bing's design not only complements the narrative but enhances it - a rarity.

I would also recommend checking out Denenberg's blog (for adults), if you haven't already. It's full of behind-the-curtain-type, historical short stories - the sort stories that never make history textbooks, the sort of stories that must be told.

This is a great book - way beyond what I thought it would be. The picture and description do not do it justice.
