An amazingly touching look into the Lincoln household, February 7, 2007
This review is from: Lincoln's Sons (Hardcover)
What I loved most about this book was the description of Mr. Lincoln's home life, the time he spent with his sons and how he reacted to being a father. Sounds like he was a wonderful father, and had he not been so tragically taken away, he would certainly have liked seeing his sons grow up. The book also describes Robert Lincoln's early years, who seems to have hungered as much for his father attention and affection as Lincoln himself did as a boy for his father's love. There is a great sensitivity in Robert but also a very clear disconnect between father and son which is interesting, as Lincoln was more drawn to his two younger sons, Tad and Willie. I also enjoyed reading about Mary Lincoln, who was a loving mother but certainly needed to be treated with care due to her extremely sensitive temperament. This is a book that can be read over and over by Lincoln devotees who love learning more about his private life. Awesome work by Mrs. Randall. I was looking for the 1955 edition of the book and found a copy on Amazon. The pages are yellowed and the book is delicate in condition, which makes me value it even more.

A Little Gem of a Book, February 23, 2006
This review is from: Lincoln's Sons (Hardcover)
I just loved this book, and am so glad I was able to get a copy. It would be wonderful if it were to be re-issued, even though it would have to be updated a bit. (For example, at the time it was written, no photograph of Eddie Lincoln was known to exist, but one has since surfaced.) It tells the fascinating story of Lincoln's four sons: Robert, always the outsider, and always trying to outlive his father's shadow; Eddie, a sweet little boy whose loss devastated his parents; Willie, so much like his father in temperment and intellect, destined to follow in his footsteps, but tragically lost at a young age; and Tad, known as "the tyrant of the white House", who grew to be a thoughtful young man, full of promise, only to have his life too, ended at a young age. The writing is very much in the 1950's style, but is so descriptive, I almost felt I could "see" what she was describing. The Lincoln's were loving, caring parents, and this is one of the few books which examines their history from this perspective. What a tragic and star-crossed family. One hopes they all have at last found peace. This is a little gem of a book, well worth seeking out.
