To be honest, I grabbed this CD as a novelty. I mean... Swing from Japan, how can one refuse!? Upon hearing the CD several times, I've come to the conclusion that they have promise, but their largest failing is their lead vocal. While she does have a lovely voice, it sounds to me like she doesn't speak English at all, or at least not well, & is simply mimicking the sound of the lyrics. Her mispronounciation makes the otherwise alright band unlistenable. Now, what *would have* been cool is if she had taken that voice of hers & scrapped the English lyrics, replacing them with a Japanese translation. That would surely have been much better, & admittedly more novel. I rated it a 3 because it would be good, but...

Is Swing an American exclusive? Not hardly. Neo-swing is still growing in Europe, Australia and now even in Japan. Linda & the Big King Jive Daddies debut CD on Slimstyle Records announces the start of Asia's love of Jumpin' Jive. Osaka based, Linda and a few of these Daddies had been doing Rockabilly until a trip to New York where they had happened to catch a swing gig while out on the town. Upon returning to Japan they put together the present Big King Jive Daddies. Loaded with eleven fairly common neo-swing standards including "Route 66", "Caldonia" and the smells like teen spirit of the swing world "Jump Jive & Wail", and you wouldn't at first expect this album to be any different than the 1000 other neo-swing CDs released in every major city around the world. What sets Linda & the Big King Jive Daddies apart from the rest is that FINALLY here is a non-American band who is not afraid to sing in their native tongue. Often Linda may muddle the English lyrics while ripping through a fast song. But she makes up for it by singing some of the versus solely in Japanese. The song selections appear to have been mainly inspired by the recent recordings Brian Setzer, Eddie Reed and the Big Kahuna. However Linda does offer some often overlooked songs from the late 50s and early 60s, "I Want You To Be My Baby", "Johnny Jingo", "Tweedle Dee" and the Isley Brother's "Shout".
